War Horse
Re: War Horse
What an amazing film! Totally epic. I know that a lot of peeps thought it was over long and boring but I found quite the contrary. It was epic but rivetting. The cinematography was amazing with very vivid colours and realistic war scenes. I really felt as if I was there at the Somme and could feel every blast and shot. I have to admit that I did have a fleeting thought of the final scene in Blackadder Goes Forth - very similar - but the power of the ensuing scenes soon made that fade. Yes I'm sure there were plot holes galore but the story translated well from book via stage to screen. I can see how this might be more of a bloke film (or whatever the opposite of a chick flick is!) and I don't think it is a family film - we had one walk out of a parent with a small boy, but then 2 1/2 hours is a long time for a wee one.
I loved every minute of this and can't wait to see it again.
Definitely my best film of 2012 so far.

Re: War Horse
Made the trip to Edinburgh this morning with OH to see this. Saw Stuartboy doing his usual of coming in at the last possible minute and sitting right at the front. Also spotted Alythonian with OH sitting in the middle rows. OT vue was pretty much full.
As for the film I thought for 146 minutes it didn't feel too long. There were times scenes were lingering a wee bit longer than necessary but the locations were beautifully shot. I didn't think there were any main characters except for Joey really. Even Albie as he wasn't in half of the film.
Agree with Stuartboy about wee children attending this screening. Immediately when the film started the wee boy talked for the majority of it asking his dad questions. And I wasn't even near the boy. Alythonian was closer. THey were there before us and we were at the screening at 10:00 so who knows how long he was sitting there.

Re: War Horse
Definitely not one for small children. The animal suffering and some of the themes are too heavy. I don't think it would hold their attention and it's a 12a for a reason!

Re: War Horse
Stuartboy didn't plan to sit right at the very front with his nose pressed against the screen. Lol. He busted a gut to travel across town and made it there by the skin of his teeth - Vue Ocean Terminal have been very strict with not admitting latecomers in the past. I entered the screening room in pitch darkness as the opening credits are writing against black. I couldn't see a thing so plonked down where I could.
That said I couldn't have cared less where I sat as this was such a good film. Did I say already that I loved it? Hmm. I might have mentioned it. Can't wait until Tuesday!
btw I think it is a tribute to the various actors (rather than me just being dozy) but I never recognised anyone. I was actually surprised to discover that Peter Mullan (who usually always looks like Peter Mullan) and Benny Cucumberpatch were actually in it! They were obviously convincing as their characters.

Btw, we ran out to the toilets pretty quickly but I am pretty sure I heard the downstairs audience at the O2 clapping wildly after the film finished.

Re: War Horse
If people thought the film was long, feel sorry for the people at the premiere tonight, being told to go at 16:30 and it finished around 21:00!
Prince William was lovely though, it started raining heavily as he was coming, he hoped out of the car, wasn't concerned about the rain and just greeted guests. The aide went to hold the umbrella for Kate and then he was like no it's okay and he held it for her and walked her up the red carpet holding the umbrella.
The handshakes were endless. There was the meet and greet with military personnel in the Stalls and then another meet and greet with the stars and backstage crew upstairs before the cast came back to the stalls to do another speech and this is all before the start of an almost 2.5 hrs film.
Almost every member of the cast was there. Peter Mullan is a bit of an anti-monarchist isn't he? He wasn't at the meet and greet but came on stage for the intro and jeans and no tie. Almost everyone was in black tie or a cocktail dress. No one was in jeans apart from Peter Mullan....
And they always play the national anthem at Royal Premieres and no one ever seems to know the words! Grrr....
Everyone seemed to be moved by the film, I was in an area where a lot of the ladies had tears in their eyes. My friend unfortunately was unmoved, "the play is much move moving" apparently. Guess I need to read the book and watch the play.

I wonder if the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge got a bag of popcorn on their seat too
