2 period pieces in a row? Surely you would have gone for something totally different!

Re: Hugo
Caught this on it last breath today. I didnt think I would ever say this but I am so glad I saw this in 3D. This was the most stunning use of 3D I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing. No, Avatar 3D did not impress me. This is really the first time I have seen 3D put to such intrinsic use in its breathtaking cinematography. There is clearly a new type of artistry at play here . Even the brightness levels which have always been my thorn in the side were acceptable.
As for the movie, this was indeed a gorgeous love letter to cinema, enchanting and very much one of those feel good fables that belong in the annual festive holiday TV program listings, along with the likes of Its a Wonderful Life. This makes a pretty good companion to The Artist, actually. Wouldn't mind seeing both of these films as a double bill. As it happens I did see this as a double bill today, the other film being Girl with the Dragon Tattoo... couldn't get more contrasting than that.
My only gripe was the boy, although likeable, he isnt the best child actor I have seen particularly when he tries to emote. However, the rest of the cast were delightful and made up for the boy's shortfalls. For the first time ever, I shall be looking forward to a 3D Blu Ray release.
8.5/10 Could have been 9/10 if wasn't for the lack of range with the young boy.

Re: Hugo
I too saw this at the end of last week, before it'd would leave cinemas and was possibly in the tiniest screening room at the Odeon Leicester Square I've been in thus far. Really disappointing as it's the type of movie best viewed on a huge screen. Furthermore I had to p*y £1 for the 3D glasses when using a cinema voucher which particularly annoyed me as it didn't say anything like that on the voucher (it just said it was valid for 3D) and had I known I would've brought my own glasses.
Anyway, contradicting pretty much everyone else in this thread; I wasn't particularly impressed by the 3D. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't breathtaking either, it was just fine. After hearing everyone rave about it I had really high expectations, which is probably the main reason I was not impressed. It was nothing like the 3D I am used to from Disneyland where items truly come out of the screen towards you. Sure there's depth, but it's not actual 3D where you feel you can touch something from the movie.
Having said that I still really enjoyed the film. The storyline was so imaginative and wonderful, everything I could've hoped for from a children's fantasy type novel adaptation. I have a severe dislike for Sasha Baron Cohen solely based on Borat clips I've seen come by on television (I don't think I've ever actually seen any of his films) but I thought he was great as the station manager. The true star though was Chloë Moretz, which made the boy (who wasn't very impressive to begin with) look quite bad.

Re: Hugo
Vouchers don't usually include the use of 3D glasses, they are extra. That's why I nowdays carry 2 pairs of glasses around with me, just in case.

Re: Hugo
This was the first time for me using a voucher for a 3D film so I had no idea this was the case. I find it a bit ridiculous that the price of the movie ticket is already significantly higher and then you have to p*y extra for glasses too. It's an all in one price in the Netherlands.
