Just got back from seeing this. Im with PXC on this one. You're not alone!

This was a cleverly crafted story. I admit I was a little lost on whats going on at the beginning but as the film rolled I understood the concept that everything we see about the legendary lovers was through the daydreams of our main modern protagonist who is obsessive over them. The story was mainly about her own search for true love with the W/E story used as a plot device. That's probably what is throwing most people off, expecting a full account of the W/E story...I am guessing, otherwise I cant really understand why this is getting so much stick while the Haywire is being praised.

The acting was superb all round. I recognise the star from the short lived Bionic Woman series remake but I think you all know her from Eastenders which I dont watch. The actress who played Wallis was excellent, exhuding the charisma and vibrancy we expect from a woman that a King would give up his throne for. The actor who played Edward was delightfully suave too and there were definite sparks of chemistry between them, which I suppose is essential for this film to work.

But what I loved most of all was the sumptious soundrack. I do love piano solos. The director has experimented with the soundtrack in some scenes but i felt it worked in a refreshing way. It so far my favourite soundtrack mix, from jazz to Fats Domino to Gershwin, very eclectic.

I really think this was a superb effort by Madonna. There is cleary some great innovation and creativity in her direction here as well as some scenes inspired by some of her own (brilliant) music videos and having being married to Guy Ritchie, she's even adopted some flashy edits...more appropriately done than her ex hub, I dare say. I am actually quite stunned that this early effort form her is as good as it is. But then again why shouldnt it be. She has always been creative, her song lyrics powerful. Perfect attributes to bring into film making.

Apart from the confusing start, I cant really find much fault with this. Perhaps the script (which was also co written by Maddona) could have been a little more tighter as the film was quite long. But thats about all the bones I can pick from it.

The twist to all this though is that Madonna has made this film so well that it is open to intepretation on wether you would sympathise with Wallis and Edward. I know Madonna wants us to (particularly with Wallis) and I do to an extent but not fully. I see them as both morally flawed and carelessly flippant to start with. They do not gain my symapathy as much as Princess Margeret who made the greater sacrifice. But that is my interpretation, the film allows us to judge in different ways and I like that.

This would make a great double bill with the Kings Speech which I havent seen but I will now as it will make a perfect follow up, its on Lovefilm instant watch, yay. All we need now is someone to make a film about Princess Margaret as there is a great tragic love story to be told there too.

8.5/10 A brilliant second directorial effort from the queen of pop

It sounds amazing! What a brilliant review and it sounds like it's my type of film. I will definitely have to make time to go and watch this. If MrGlass and prettyxcool (fellow royalists) love this I'm sure that I will.

Well said MrG! I agree with you. And funnily I was thinking the same about Princess Margaret - I would love to see a film about her. I am still very impressed with the film and would happily see it again! :D

There was a TV movie about Princess Margaret on Channel 4 back in 2005 called The Queen's Sister http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0464165/
