Re: Harry Brown
Just got back, it was quite good and I gotta say more griping than the title would really suggest. Michael Caine was excellent. It was quite enjoyable, if a bit on the grim side.
102 Different free films seen in 2010 plus 2 repeat viewings and a few tv show screenings... not too shabby. Thanks to everyone for their contributions here.

Re: Harry Brown
No security at Vue West End btw, but they stuck us in rubbish screen 6, which filled up fairly quickly.
I can't say I enjoyed it. How can you enjoy that much violence? Horribly grim and bloody, yes, we all like to see avenging ex-marines take the baddies out but that just did not really have a story and "the British Gran Torino" this wasn't. In fact it's a sacrilege comparing the two! If you remember, in Gran Torino Clint Eastwood didn't kill anyone, he was far too clever for that. I like Michael Caine, but that was such a one-dimensional role they gave him that he didn't really shine - a far cry from Is Anybody There?
6/10 is all I can give this.

Re: Harry Brown
I was at Wimbledon and quite a lot of people walked out. I nearly did but my boyfriend was enjoying the film. Though the storyline was good, I felt that it was too violent and aggressive.

Re: Harry Brown
Just got back from this after watching it at Coatbridge Showcase.
Yes, it was a bit grim, and certainly violent, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought the initial comparisons to Gran Torino were unfair as it is a completely different beast, mired in realism, and not stretching the grunts and schmaltz of former to hopeful statuette glory. Michael Caine will certainly have more emotional connection in other movies, like Is Anybody There, but it was this emotional detachment that for me, made sense for his character. Ben Drew as Noel was also strong, and yet another scene stealing performance from Sean Harris, who just burns up everyone else whenever he's on screen!
A solid 8.5/10 but not for the squeamish!
At the end, the cinema manager, was giving out free tix to everyone for a movie of their choice, as the first few minutes were out of focus (everyone I heard waiting to get a comp thought it was part of the POV intro!) A brilliant gesture, esp for a free showing, so well done the team at Coatbridge Showcase for making sure all of their customers are treated to a first class service!

Re: Harry Brown
That's what disappointed me Beate, all the early references to him being in the marines I thought he'd come up with something clever and inventive and the twist would be something he'd set up. It has made me appreciate just how good Gran Torino was though.

Yeah i noticed a lot of people walking out aswell at the violent momentsnicolewright wrote:I was at Wimbledon and quite a lot of people walked out. I nearly did but my boyfriend was enjoying the film. Though the storyline was good, I felt that it was too violent and aggressive.
But i really enjoyed it, i would watch it again, reminded me of 'Adulthood', particularily the harrowing pre-credits scene, although i must admit, the ending was a bit ridicuolus, i.e a western shootout at the pub, and a revolution seemingly taking place outside on a rundown estate lol

Re: Harry Brown
The movie was strictly average and agree with most of the comments in this discussion that the violence co-efficient was way too much...Most of the characters were one dimensional - An average score of 7/10 from my side but then it was free so can't complain... and yes, 3-4 ppl did walk out 45 mts into the movie...

I thought Michael Caine was excellent, although the story wasn't that strong. 6.5/10 from me.
On a side note, that was one of the least enjoyable screenings I've been to in a while in terms of audience. Piracy will not be the death of cinema. The death of cinema will be attributed to the rustlers, the mumblers, the stinkers and the texters. There was a group of seven at our screening who were presumably texting each other (they were in a group of 3, and two 2s). I did have a word with the group nearest, yet they still persisted.
Eventually they all left at about half way. This was at Newcastle Empire.

Saw this in Edinburgh Fountain Park tonight. Long queue to get in and the security was simply speaking to folks asking if they had mobiles to turn them off! took them ages tho
Knew film was in the same vein as Gran Torino before I went to see it. But altho the story was similar Gran Torino beats this by a mile! Too much violence! Some twists in it and did enjoy it despite all the violence.
Found the underpass scenes very believable in that a lot of people here will only go thro underpasses during the day as at night you dont know who will be lurking about!
Michael Caine and Emily Mortimer very good
8/10 from me
