I found this pretty dire. Very disappointing as I was expecting a lot but the story telling style was quite dull and the less said about the make up the better - like kevinknapman said, it totally reminded me of the Spike Jonze elderly get up in Jackass. Not good for a serious film.

I really do like Leonardo DiCaprio and he rarely disappoints. He is a fine actor. I do think he did a good job here. I found him very believable as J Edgar. If you had asked me before, I would have said Leo is too good looking to physically resemble J Edgar but the styling, particularly in the younger years (plus DiCaprio's great acting) pulled it off (make up in the later years is another matter, particularly for Clyde). One thing I did notice is that brown eyes really do not suit him.

I thought it was quite long, but that was probably because I was finding it quite tiresome in places. Only 5/10 for me.

Amusing article comparing Armie Hammer's make-up to several other things (including Johnny Knoxville as an old man in Jackass)

Have a look at pictures of Herbert Hoover (rather than J. Edgar) and see if he doesn't look more like DiCrapio especially the older prosthetic version.

It was difficult to appreciate the good bits in the film (there were some I think) as the battle between how to do excellent ageing make up (DiCaprio) and how to slap dough on actors faces and assume the public wont notice (the rest) was too distracting. What were they thinking of?

Clyde resembled a "wizzened pepperami" according to Film 2012 - pretty accurate!

Don't forget the Albino bit! I laughed out loud. And probably misspelled it on twitter.

Apart from the make-up I enjoyed this film. I was disappointed that whole chunks of the history were ignored though, as this is the story of a really fascinating historical figure.

Am also disappointed that none of you that didn't like it managed to come up with a sentence that included the words Hoover and sucked!
