The cheapest lastminute.com deals are often the seats in the upper circle towards the back which you can b*y for the same price (if not cheaper because there often is no booking fee) directly from the theatre box office in person or over the phone.

For top price tickets etc they do often have a better price than the theatre itself, but TKTS is usually cheapest on the day of the performance or 1 or 2 days in advance (depending on the show)
This is true, but I was lucky enough to p*y £10 for Crazy For You tix through lastminute and ended up with good seats in the stalls. It really is a matter of luck and keeping fingers crossed that the performance isn't busy so that they close down parts of the theatre resulting in upgrades.

I don't get how opening Singing in the Rain at the Palace Theatre soon is going to appeal during the Olympics. I would have thought Priscilla appealed more. Then again I am surprised Legally Blonde is closing early...
I think next to go is a toss up between Shrek and ROA (sorry to disappoint)

Completely agree about Priscilla and Legally Blonde. RoA sales have surprisingly really picked up the last few weeks so crossing my fingers it's not closing (I think they're trying to stretch it to June or July, whenever the movie comes out, to hopefully get a boost after the movie. If it doesn't get that then it's the end for that as well). No idea how well or not well Shrek is doing in ticket sales but I haven't read the greatest reviews from it.

Very lucky! It's always worth to ask for an upgrade to better seats if the theater looks fairly empty, which you can always check beforehand on the site when you see what seats are still available for that day (whether tickets are through lastminute.com or the box office)

When we went to see the Sound of Music (I think), lots of people were being upgraded. OH asked, but they were only doing it for people that booked direct through the theatre.

Ms Thrifty wrote:That must explain it, then, c_t - for I have almost invariably booked these seats but never been offered, or booked, the front row, hence never realised it wasn't available in advance. And of course I had no interest in booking for Frankenstein!

When I lived in Croydon I often used to go up early and queue for day seats but it's too far now and not a good use of my time. Great if you are more local or prepared to wait, though.
Day seats for popular NT productions such as Frankenstein and One Man, Two Guvnors are impossible to get without queuing for a long time which wouldn't be worth it for you. But less popular/well-known shows will have day seats all day, so worth popping into the NT if you're in the city anyway and considering going to the theatre that night just to see what's available.

I've been upgraded with lastminute.com tickets. But I guess it depends on the theatre and/or mood of the box office person!

Yes it does make sense to stretch ROA until the film comes out, as that will definitely give it a boost, unless the film really flops badly

The film won't flop if some people here see it as often as they have the stage show!
