Grisha's personal life is a car crash but as an air traffic controller he knows he has the skills to avert a major disaster.
Asia is a television journalist and is used to reporting tragedies but never expected to find herself at the centre of one.
When a Polish plane crashes near a Russian airport, Grisha and Asia are reluctantly drawn into a maelstrom of grief, bad blood and conspiracy theories.
As their worlds are turned upside down, they are forced to question who their friends and enemies are.
SARAH GROCHALA became the fourth playwright to win the OffWestEnd.com Adopt A Playwright Award. Launched by OffWestEnd.com in 2008, the award helps playwrights of quality – who have already had at least one play staged – to find the time, space and financial backing to write another. We want to make sure that talented new writers from backgrounds that offer little encouragement or financial support do not give up but are given a fair chance to prove themselves and take their place among our culture's storytellers. Over the course of last year, Sarah wrote SMOLENSK and is pleased to share the reading of this near-final draft with OffWestEnders everywhere!
Sarah's play S-27 won the 2007 Protect the Human Playwriting Competition and was also shortlisted for The King's Cross Award and the Leah Ryan Prize for Emerging Women Writers. S-27 premiered at the Finborough Theatre in June 2009, was revived at the Griffin Theatre in Sydney in March 2010. S-27 is currently in production in Canada and will be produced as part of the Toronto Fringe Festival this summer. Other plays include: Waiting for Romeo (Pleasance Islington 2009; Edinburgh Festival 2006) and Open Ground (Theatro Technis 2005). Sarah has written short plays for The Miniaturists and for Theatre 503. Other recent projects include commissions for the RSC and Agent 160.
