Free Theatre/Concert Tickets Discussion Thread

Thanks to a competition win I saw One Man, Two Guvnors last night at the Theatre Royal Haymarket.

I had very high expectations after reading nothing but glowing 5 star reviews, and because of that I was a bit disappointed at the start of the play. The first 20 minutes or so, which introduced us to the main characters, had very little slapstick humour in them and well, were bordering on plain boring. However, as soon as the play started focusing on main character Francis and him trying to work for his "two guvnors" it became downright hilarious.

The best scene by far was the "dinner scene" at the end of act 1, which had me almost literally roflmao. Even the repeated jokes did not get old. And [spoiler]the placement of actors in the audience was very cleverly done with the actors on stage supposedly falling out of character and blaming the audience members in question. Sure had us guessing and made us Google whether they were plants or not in the interval.[/spoiler]
Unfortunately the second act was not as good as the last part of the first half, but there were still plenty of funny moments to be had and overall it was a solid play.

It's a shame we didn't get to see James Corden in the lead but Owain Arthur more than hold his own.

Also, Ben Mansfield (who played Stanley) is super cute. Might need to check out Primeval just for him.

Already had "Kings Speech" booked for the Sat matinee so the Old Vic matinee was an impossibility!

Saw the kings speech tonight and how wonderful it was.

I got a box but realised they were uncomfortable so moved to the stalls.

I'm so glad I saw this as I have only just seen the film. The play was very similar to the film thOugh there was more politics in the film as they had glossed over his abdication.

Kings Speech is pretty good actually!

Its really the movie, but you get to see the whole stage of course and it translates well to the stage. I found Bertie here more appealing than the film one (where its more clear he is a knob). Great acting all round - Winston Churchill was my fave though, an amiable nutter!

Criticisms? not really. It felt a bit rushed towards the end, but I was happy with the pace, I dont like slow blahblahblah theatre.
