This film is a real achievement on so many levels. Made on around a million dollars, by the promising young Welsh director Gareth Evans and filmed in Indonesia over a very demanding time scale, it bristles with high-octane action from the outset. He delegates the choreography to the more than capable hands of Yayan Ruhian (plays Mad Dog), who was in a previous life, a member of the Indonesian special forces, and is an expert in Pencak Silat, which is the the combat martial art, which features throughout the film.
Evans shows real flare with his cinematography, and his choice of Mike Shinoda (Linkin Park), to create an original soundtrack proves inspired. The script is fairly wafer thin, with the action taking complete priority. It contains many of the cliches that are popular within Asian cinema, but if your a fan of the genre, these are familiar and rather comforting. 8/10.
My heart sank when a previous poster branded it "complete and utter shyte". Everyone has a right to an opinion, but hopefully that harsh and sweeping comment won't put off anyone.
IMDB : 8.3 (7086) - Rotten Tomatoes : 83%
Awards : Dublin International Film Festival 2012 : Audience Award (Best Film), Critics Award (Best Film)
Toronto International Film Festival 2012 : People's Choice Award (Best Film)

Went to Wandsworth to see this (thanks Bobsters!) we werent allowed into the theatre until well after 6.30 and the film started rather late, might have had something to do with the post film interview set up, lighting, camera, green screen etc. I have to say it was well worth the wait!
The raid has a very short build up before it gets right into the action which is an unashamed and unrelenting gore-fest! Although at no point did I feel it was overly gratuitous. Not much time is spent on developing characters initially but you still find yourself rooting for the good guys, particularly the main character as you learn more. My mouth was wide open in pure shock of the brutality at times and because of the incredible martial arts at others, as the plot thickened every kill was more spectacular than the last. These were the best hand to hand combat scenes I have watched in a long time maybe ever! I felt it took the premises of certain scenes in kill bill and the matrix and shot them far more realistically. You could tell that this film had captured peoples emotions from the reactions in the theatre. This was the first film i had been to where the audience applauded at the end of a scene and it truly deserved it. If you liked oldboy, the man from nowhere, battle royale you will love this.

Went to see this last night at cineworld. Personally find it's bit too gory and disturbing. Is it just me think those 'residents' look and fight like zombies?

I was thinking exactly the same thing sh. The titles on the front site always correspond with IMDB and I never change them. Even if the matching title on the forum disagrees. The front site post still has the "Redemption (II)" included in it so not a change from my end. So not sure why it has been amended here.

Not by me. Probably to do with how it is on the front page.
It wasn't me. It wasn't you. It can't have been superhero else we would have noticed. So..... who was it then?

I was wondering exactly the same thing!

That's what it says on IMDB! I didn't just make it up for decoration purposes!
Maybe something to do with translation of the original title?
