Re: Precious
Seen this tonight - like the comment above - 'scoops the happiness out of you'. Not quite the usual happy ending expected from over the pond - but kept OH and myself talking about it for quite a while afterwards.
Not sure if 'enjoyed' is quite the word to use for this film, mainly to do with the subject matter - would definitely recommend it.

Re: Precious
Saw this last night and have to say I found it very harrowing and very interesting. What struck me most of all though was the performances, especially from people we had not necessarily seen portraying these types of characters before.
It was good to see Mariah Carey and Lenny Kravitz taking roles in this film, and I was mesmerised that Mo'Nique (who played 'Mrs Parker' in 90's TV comedies 'Moesha' and 'The Parkers') was so incredibly different from what I had seen her in previously. I found her portrayal of Precious' mother painfully believable.
It did feel a little long in places, but kudos to the people involved for tackling such a difficult story in a hard hitting way without it being unbearable to watch.
Very impressive film, hard going and not for everyone at all times, but I am glad I saw it.

Heavy handed, Oscar bait, misery porn. Awful attempts at jokes too. The classmates are so crap and eccentric.

Found some parts slow. Overall gripping, intense, thought provoking and very well acted.

Re: Precious
Saw this on Monday night thanks to a-person for the tickets.
Mixed feelings about this as it was a horrific tale of abuse. But felt the end left you wondering how she could cope with life on her own with the two children. I also found it difficult at times to make out what she was saying. Overall a 7 out of 10.

Re: Precious
This movie is riding purely on the coat-tails of its subject matter alone (and the related endorsements by the First Couple of America - Obama and Oprah). Any Oscar nominations it gets will probably only reflect that and, as a case in point, it was largely ignored by the Golden Globes.
I'm not being negative about the subject-matter itself by any means, and some of the performances by the non-actors in the cast are good by the standards of non-actors, but the direction and the script are both pretty awful (we're talking TV movie standards here) and there are certain decisions taken by the filmmakers such as - 'let's take Mariah Carey and just wipe off her make-up instead of teaching her how to act' - that damage the film's credibility as a whole...

I thought it was another London screen when I saw it, but apparently it's in Leeds.Beate wrote:I've never heard of the Picturehouse Hyde Park before?

Re: Precious
I'm really sorry that I missed out on these tickets this morning - just how quickly did they go? It's very rare indeed to have any free screenings at the Tyneside Cinema in Newcastle, one of the most beautiful cinemas in the UK, imo of course!
I'm hoping for more codes for this one!
