Eastern Promises

#1 Post by prettyxcool » Thu Jun 28, 2012 11:38 pm

Not sure where to post this, so here is as good as any, I suppose!

I went to see Eastern Promises at LFS (London Film School) tonight, followed by a Q&A with producer Paul Webster (Atonement, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, Brighton Rock).

Wow, I was not expecting such a violent film that made the audience gasp and hide behind their hands, me too. I thought Kill List/Killer Joe was violent but I really could not watch - it was brutal, sudden and loud. Also it was a slow film, not what people expect of a thriller (as the producer later tells us too.)

Very good cast and very believable Russian accents from non-Russian actors and a brilliant script. It has a moral story and although violent there are quiet moments, where the characters mesmerise you whether they are good or evil, you really feel for them. They are so real. A haunting and dark film that really had me on the edge of my seat. 9/10.

After a fairly lengthy Q&A (over an hour!) - with student writers/actors/directors, etc, one had flown in from South Africa, asking plenty of questions, we were treated to pizza and beer afterwards.

A very enjoyable evening.

A very dark London, but very atmospheric!

Yes, I know Petticoat Lane, not dark in real life! :P But to create a gritty London in the film, it felt dark. ;)

I agree with you RickyRaj. Didn't know so many of you have seen it already. May be I get admin to move this to its own thread! :D
