Re: Ice Age: Continental Drift
Saw this at the O2 this morning. Woke up at 7pm on Friday and then stayed up right through to 7 am when i had to leave to catch my Bus to the train station. at 8:40 i met up with a couple of friends who were also animators and were really looking forward to seeing this for the technical aspects, so i invited them along. It was bucketing rain outside (and me in my shorts and t shirt), so we huddled at the entrance of the O2 while being protected by the rain (it wasn't open yet). When it opened gave them a tour of the O2 and they were blown away (as they are from Romania). Then we queued up for the film and when we got into the screen they were impressed as its the biggest screen they've ever been to and were slack jawed (i told them wait til they get a screening to the Empire). An hour more of joking, dancing to select music tracks and getting food for us all the film finally started.
I was kind of harsh on this film while watching it as i forgot it was supposed to be a kids movie/family fun and i ended up cringing at alot of scenes, being bored by how predictable alot of scenes were. How the attempts at sadness and tragedy didn't work as i knew nothing bad would end up happening. And alot of the "family values" and "lessons" were so painfully hammered in and forced and, to be honest, kind of done before many times that i kind of kept rolling my eyeballs. However alot of the actual jokes and visual humour (e.g: Granny's new Teeth) made me laugh and clicked well regardless of plotting. Also i admired how it openly mocked itself at a few times: "We fought dinosaurs. It didn't make sense but it was fun", so it definitely was a fun film to be at. Also the visual spectacle was also fantastic such as the storms and tidal waves. Me and my friend were talking afterwards how much simulation that must've required and were impressed at how much work they went into. It also looks like the Sky Superscreen had their 3d adjusted as the 3d was ALOT better than Spider-mans. I'm a big lover of 3d even though i hate actually making 3d (what with defining conversion points, fixing colour shifts by mapping the left eye to the right eye. Converting through rotoscoping with depth and rotomation. Gives me a brain tumour), but the projectors seemed screwed up with Spider-mans 3d and the alignment was off in that screening resulting in 3d that didn't work. However the vertical alignment seemed fixed here and the 3d was its normal joy to sit through (to me).
So yeah. Light family fun with predictable plotting, tired lessons, but alot of spectacle and enough laughs to pull people through the journey
6.8/10

saw this at the Empire Screen 1 (there was no goodie bag there either, Beate; just this awful pseudo-water); was a bit crap; too many characters and subplots; scrat is and will remain my favourite.

Saw this at the 02 yesterday, and followed by an inventive Simpsons short that i loved, i felt the film was good enough, but too many subplots and characters ultimately made this messy. Plus, apart for some decent gags, it was mainly not very memorable. 6/10

Saw this today, completely loved it!
Not going to go intoa full on review purely because everyone else has pretty much summed it up, definitely going to see it again when it's out! :)

Just received an address request for sending out a goody bag so might get my own whoopee cushion soon! How big was that goody bag? Depending on size will have to give them office address.
