This is exactly the point at which I thought the film should have ended - and personally I wish it had, but it takes all sorts and this sounds like a Marmite film.Beate wrote:This is shaping up to be one of my favourite films of this year, it's so beautiful. I thought the bits after that were weird
how did he suddenly get back so quickly and why did they need to escape the riots if it turned out that all was well.... and how did she get back there? Why did he not just wait at his dad's if he was going to go back and be alone anyway?!
Re: Seeking a Friend for the End of the World
Well I really liked this.
I enjoyed the black comedy build up and thought that the move into more sentimental romantic drama was justifiable and well-handled.
A great cast with some wonderful cameos along the way also. Steve Carell's subdued performance was just right I thought and though I'm fairly indifferent to Keira Knightley as an actress I actually quite liked her here. Only her love of vinyl grated a little as it seemed like a hip affectation rather than a genuine character trait. Though it did mean some decent songs on the soundtrack.
As I said there was some great cameos. Desperate Housewives' Mark Moses as the serious news anchor, professional to the last. TJ Miller and Gillian Jacobs both excellent as the over-friendly staff at 'Friendly's'. Melanie Lynskey, Patton Oswalt, Rob Corddry, Connie Britton, Will Petersen, Ron Huebel, Adam Brody, Jim O'Heir also all very good. Oh and of course Sorry the dog was cute.
My only problem with it was a few goofs that slightly undermined my enjoyment. I don't usually spot that kind of thing but they were a bit obvious here. The main one I spotted was when Steve Carrell puts on the album Scott by Scott Walker and 'The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore' comes on. Seeing as that's a Walker Brothers song, it isn't on that album. A minor mistake perhaps but still noticable. I'm assuming that there was originally a track from that album but was probably changed later (maybe as a result of a test screening) to something more famous and recognisable. The other one I noticed is possibly a bit spoilery so I'll hide that one
There is no way a Cessna light aircraft would be able to make the journey from the US to Britain as it's way too small and doesn't have the fuel capacity. Admittedly they never actually made the journey in the end but an experienced pilot wouldn't even have attempted it
There are couple of others and a few plot holes but they didn't completely spoil my enjoyment
As I said I really liked it. I can understand why others may not be so keen but it worked for me. I get teary-eyed quite easily at films but oddly didn't as much as I expected to here, though there were several beautifully played moments towards the end. Though it doesn't quite reach the heights of other 'end of the world' relationship films like Miracle Mile with Anthony Edwards and Mare Winningham or Don McKellar's Last Night (both underrated films that deserve to be better known).
A wonderful film and worth seeing though.

I did wonder about that. But got side tracked about
the fact that she wasn't wearing a seatbelt.
kevinknapman wrote:
There is no way a Cessna light aircraft would be able to make the journey from the US to Britain as it's way too small and doesn't have the fuel capacity. Oh and I really want to go to Friendly's (as featured in the early part of that bit, not the end bit).

Yep, there are definitely some plot holes in there and illogical things about planes and cars and distances, but it really didn't bother me and as for the album track thing, you gotta be a bit of a connoisseur to spot this so well done - I wouldn't have a clue, I just enjoyed the music, which was ace throughout.
