Re: Precious
The Picturehouse Greenwich lists the Sunday 17th screening as a Members Free Preview as well so that is probably the case across the board which means they give out tickets to members too.

Re: Precious
Went to see this movie today at Ritzy in Brixton. I was really impressed how much nicer this cinema is compared to Screen on the Green in Islington. I really liked how quirky it looks, yet the screening rooms were still good.
The screening was almost 100% full. I think they were waiting for more people to arrive or get a seat so the screening started 10-15 minutes late.
As for the film, both my OH and I thought it was very good. Ok, you won't feel happy after watching it. It makes you wonder how some parents can be so sadistic... 8/10

Re: Precious
I saw this film this morning. I found it a very powerful tale, holding back no punches, with terrific acting from Precious and mother. I don't think that Mariah Carey had enough screentime to merit an Oscar nomination to be honest.

Yeah, saw it this morning and I was thinking the same, I was surprised how small her part was considering she seems to be one of the main selling points of the film. She was good enough, but good enough for an Oscar nomination......? Not really.andrews wrote:I saw this film this morning. What did Mariah Carey do that was so deserving of an Oscar? Even if she had longer screen time. It was an amazing film though, such a harrowing story but done with some light hearted moments. 8/10

I have to agree re Mariah Carey! Yes, perhaps brave of her to be seen like she was there rather than with big hair make-up and a glam frock, but those three things do not an Oscar maketh!
Edinburgh was only about 40% full this morning.
It was a deeply moving film, and a tragic story well told. The young actress was very good.

Brilliant movie, thoroughly engrossing, the auditorium was in unison, hushed, horror, laughter, surprise, tbh I've never seen a movie like it where everyone was so focussed on the screen. 10/10 from me for sure.

Re: Precious
OK - I thought there were many great performances in this (distrurbing), but I did not recognise Mariah Carey as the social worker, and I though the character was totally believable, like watching a 'fly on the wall' it was so 'underplayed'. It was more realistic for being 'not acted'. I would have looked back when she went to the soft drinks, and asked about the file, and the handbag was left on the desk!!!! Why??? given the client base...?
There were many great performances, but chilled me - there was depth here..

Re: Precious
I went to see it at Everyman Belsize Park today, never been to the cinema before and must admit I quite liked it, esp with the cushions on the seats, the large leg room and the general nice Sunday atmosphere in the cinema and area.
The movie was quite good, but I don't expect it to be the winner of the Best Picture and I am not surprised Oprah has been heavily supporting the film, considering she gets quite a good mention in the film. The story was quite harrowing but rather underplayed (apart from the scenes with Precious' mother). There wasn't too much screen violence throughout the film but only at key points.
I have a feeling there were more scenes with Mariah Carey but they've been left on the cutting room floor, hence what's left were her best bits. I liked the "fantasy scenes" when Precious dreamed of a better life and also the ending I thought was quite uplifiting.
However I was expecting a more dramatic film and I thought the film was a little too "underplayed". I would give the film a 7/10
