That goes for anyone else too. Get a ticker in your signature and start to monitor your progress - it's a great motivator! Just ask our own newly svelte Diane. :D
Perhaps I ought to get one going the other way. I keep reading the horrors of NOT putting on weight  Should be aiming for 1/2kg every week!!! Anyone want to pass me theirs?

I'm sure that I can fit him in my boiling couldron when I'm doing some batch cooking http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9 ... xKBtMfUeUh this is me making my pea soup.
Eeek - I can see that I'm going to have to watch what I'm saying in future.
One thing though, Diane.....I think that you'll need to turn the heat down on that cauldron of Anakin's pea soup, otherwise it will catch! :p
Err, Diane, I'm not sure it's supposed to look like that.... 8O

Well done again to everyone, menus are sounding delish and it's great to see everyone keep going with both big and little changes!

It'd also be great for their numerical skills, adding everything up. Although I guess the worry is that children are impressionable and they're too young to have to worry about that? I've also always thought children should learn how to manage their money from school age. (Sorry even though I'm on holidays it's hard not to think about teacher stuff ;)

Hi ClareBarr!! I agree with you that children should be taught about managing their money, from a very young age too. Healthy eating should definitely be taught/encouraged. But I wouldn't want mine to be counting calories all the time when they're going through their 'growing' stages. My daughter is health-conscious, through vanity and a medical condition. It worries me at times because she believes a lot of the 'stupid' advice out there. Mind you, she makes me laugh ... I'm told to b*y this, that and the other because she CANNOT eat any junk - then she goes out with her mates and eats mcdonalds, ice creams, the lot!!!
Maybe not calorie counting as such, but learning the fat content/salt/sugar content - percentages etc would be helpful and portion control, knowing how much they should eat and very easy stuff - portion of veg should be equivalent to their fist size, there's too much 'this is good for you, this is bad for you' but no real explanation as to why.

Something does need to be done, my children are primary school age, when you go to assembly and just see the amount of children who at that age are overweight it really is quite worrying, very different from when I was young. However, as much as the schools teach them, they have no control over what their parents put on their plates or keep in the cupboards for them to snack on.
Preferred Cinema's now Paignton or Exeter!

PRESTON: that is such a good idea, going to the supermarket half an hour before closing. My Sister used to do that every Saturday and got really good bargains. My supermarket is open 24-hours. They do reduce stuff, but you never know when it's gonna be!! I have 'picky' eaters. One minute they want 'healthy' foods cos they're trying to lose weight (or in the boys' case, bulk up!!), the next they moan "all we ever have is salads"!! I literally can't win!! I figure, one or all will moan, whatever I dish up, so I try to please all of them, but in the end it's my purse and me that determines what we have!!! I envy you with your cycling. I live in a very packed-London and would not risk cycling on the roads here. I don't have a car, so can't drive to somewhere nice. My Mum wouldn't let me have a bike as a kid, cos my Sister almost got hit by a car while on a mate's bike! When my eldest was about 5, we went to my Mum's caravan in Dymchurch and hired bikes for a week ... brilliant!! Cycling along the sea front, down country lanes. And only once did I almost get knocked over - and it wasn't my fault!!!

We were taught that at school that's why I loved the weighing tables learning about percentages and balanced diet. We had a plate that you stuck your cards on with different foods that would only fit if it was balanced like a jigsaw - That was in 1970 though
They should bring it back - Preston has pictures of me on the weighing table pre and post chubby arms :giggle:

I do my "mean" shopping, as it gets called in this house, at our local Waitrose. Their prices are normally outrageous and I would never b*y anything from them at the full price. However, the quality of their stuff really is superb, and because they close at 21:00 every night and 16:00 on Sundays - they start a massive reducing exercise each night for an hour before they close. Everything with an expiring sell b*y date gets reduced to sometimes a tenth of the original price.

If you b*y things that were on special offer (as in 3 for the price of 2) the stuff frequently actually ends up better than free, as the discount applied by their sysytem uses the original price to work out how much to take off. I used to be embarrassed only b*ying the cheap stuff - but now I don't care what anyone thinks. I'm not too proud to save money where I can, and spend it on other useful stuff instead. To me that makes a lot of sense - to the rest of my family (especially my kids) it's mean and embarrassing - needless to say no-one ever goes shopping for food with me ;)

What you were saying about cooking for others resonates with me too Jojo.

When I was a kid my mum used to cook something and we'd all sit down together and eat it. We all had the same - No problem.
Now we (because to be fair to my wife, it's not just me doing the cooking) seem to have to prepare loads of different things to suit everyone's tastes for the same mealtime. It's partly because one of my girls has an allergy to nut products, the other doesn't eat any meat, fish or some animal products like stock. Obviously that's fair enough and can't be helped.

However, the second one is particularly picky and won't eat tomato skin, potato skin, grapes etc etc the list goes on! Bottom line is finding something that is suitable for everyone becomes a nightmare. Of course the lazy kids won't bring themselves to actually prepare something for themselves either. Some days it feels like I'm running a cafe here! Still at least I have the time now that I'm retired I suppose.

Yeah I'm really loving it too - I took it up around the same time as I started my dieting on here and it's pretty much all I do by way of exercise these days. You are right though it's much better fun and feels a lot safer away from the traffic. I'm going out cycling tomorrow with two friends, one of whom I know will be trying to prove something after last week's run. It's all very good natured but there is definately some psychology and competitiveness creeping in - hence the only semi-serious/partially joking shaving of the legs thing! It could happen yet! No don't be daft of course it couldn't! Hmmm....I wonder though... :shifty:

It could be a bit of a long and exhausting trip as no-one will want to be the first to admit that they've had enough! ;) Blokes eh?

I was just telling one of my current bike mates that when I was about 16 or 17 I stopped going to school on my bike and started walking instead because I became so self-conscious about riding it when I was "too old" as some of my then mates had started riding to school on motorbikes. Now here we are 40 years on and I can't get enough of it! With age comes self-confidence, eh!! o/ :p

My kids don't like if I b*y 'value' products!! I only b*y certain stuff that I know is still good to eat/use. For months, they had no idea they were using 'value' ketchup cos I was transferring it into a Heinz bottle!! Same with the shreddies and the branflakes!! And some shampoo!!

I can remember eating loads of 'yukky' dinners as a kid (sorry mum, but who has fried egg with mashed potato?!! Actually it was one of my dad's faves!! And my sister LOVED mince - I HATE MINCE TO THIS DAY!!), but you ate whatever you were given and was grateful. I don't do lots of different dinners at one mealtime, but I do variations of the meal. They usually eat what I give them and they know full well that if they moan, they won't get any treats that I have LOCKED away (we've spoken before about having to hide all the treats!!) Tonight will be scampi, chips, salad and crusty bread .. me and one son will have all that .. my youngest daughter will just have a massive salad .. my other son won't have the chips .. the other girl hasn't texted back with her order yet!!

Just back from our trip. Fish and chips were fabulous as usual but we were about to sit on a seat at the harbour when the rain started so had to sit in the car instead. Had a good day out but didn't get walking as much as would have liked a it was dry, then poured rain, dry, then came down in torrential rain. What a summer!! :( Feel so sorry for all the school kids on holiday.

Preston I used to go to Tesco's after 8pm at night and get a load of things for next to nothing. We moved house and it is too far to walk to now so only get bargains if they have anthing reduced during the day. Love bargains! ;)
