I have to congratulate Mo'Nique for winning the Best supporting actress for a drama at the Golden Globes, I think she had by far the standout performance in the film. Apparently she does mainly comedy films, but I must admit I don't recall any of her previous films.

I see your point but, to be honest, I was glad that there wasn't too much screen violence.

I guess that Oprah was involved because she was raped by family members as a child.

I think Oprah's involvement comes from her featuring the novel on her "Book Club" which always gets smaller books maximum exposure, then Tyler Perry also got involved somewhere along the line and that's pretty much how the movie ended up getting made.

In fact I'm surprised that it wasn't originally called - "Tyler Perry Presents: Sponsored by Oprah's Book Club: Precious: From the novel Push by Sapphrire"... :P

Although you may well be right that her own experiences as a child might have have been a factor in her reasons for featuring it in the Book Club.

(P.S. And I'm still waiting for it to be revealed that the main character was actually played by Tyler Perry in a fat suit... :P)

Saw this at the Everyman Belsize Park yesterday morning. I love the cinema. So comfy and with great attention to detail (e.g the film plays through cubicle speakers while you're in the loo!)
I admit to feeling a bit anxious before we went, as I don't enjoy seeing violence on screen. I knew enough about this film to expect it to be rather harrowing. However, I thought that the violence was handled well, and was suggestive enough without being bloody.
I was genuinely shocked by the emotional ride of this film, and I thought the main performances were fantastic.
I agree with the comments about Mariah Carey not being on screen long enough or doing anything particularly worthy of an Oscar nomination. However, I do thank her for giving me hope that perhaps any other ordinary-looking woman could be made into a stunning diva (here's hoping anyway, especially for my wedding this weekend - and thanks to the FMUKer's who have sent me sweet congratulations messages about this)
Whilst I've heard the film described as bleak, I found the ending uplifting, and a real testament to human strength. I also found it encouraging how Precious has broken the cycle of abuse that can run from one generation to the next in familes.
I also noted that Oprah was listed as a co-producer in the credits, so I wasn't surprised she got namechecked in the film!
We talked about this film all the way home from the cinema, and I think that anything which forces these subjects (incest, abuse, HIV) into the open is definitely a good thing.
The more I think about it, the more enthusiastic I feel about it.

Did you take your further husband to see the film? It's not exactly a film for a date (even though the cinema had those nice seats for couples). Congratulations by the way cheekyweelassie!

PRECIOUS--a very well acted film-all the performnces seemed to be spot on. The story is very
gritty but has a very positive message. Would not be surprised to see Oscar nominations for this film

cripes well the person playing precious ain't exactly blessed is she? and the film did leave me awash with woe n misery, hmmm and i was a little put off my the smell of a sunday roast cooking in the downstairs restuarant, oh and i did chuckle a lot at andrews walking right into the mens toilets and the running away all beetroot red and mortified, but i loved it, even though it seems kinda wrong to say that. my interest was kept throughout the only problem that spoilt it slightly was that it was soooo difficult to understand what was being said some of the time and so for that reason i'm marking it down to 8.5/10. ggod effort. oh and i think mariah looked better without all the slap.

Presume I'm not the only one, but just had this:

Are you writing about films? Do you have a blog or a social networking site where you talk about films?

We are setting up daytime previews for PRECIOUS next Monday or Tuesday and wanted to let you know as we really hope you will be able to attend.

Precious: Based on the Novel "Push" by Sapphire is a 2009 American drama film directed by Lee Daniels. Precious is an adaptation of the award-winning 1996 novel Push by Sapphire. The film's mainly female cast features Gabourey Sidibe as the title character, and Mo'Nique, Paula Patton, Mariah Carey and Lenny Kravitz in supporting roles. The film marked the acting debut of Sidibe.

DAYTIME Previews will be at Odeon: Wimbledon, Richmond, Holloway, Swiss, Camden (Kensington tbc)

As soon as we have date and time confirmed we will send you information to download tickets.

This film is getting amazing critical acclaim, for example:

'A blow-your-socks-off triumph. Be moved. Very, very moved'
EMPIRE ***** (5 stars)

The film is not light and fluffy, and we want to be sure it is something you want to see and hopefully can talk about - check out the trailer:

Preview information to follow shortly but any enquiries to help@seefilmfirst.com
