Millennium: The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

#1 Post by bevvy » Sat Aug 29, 2009 10:05 pm

I saw this this afternoon , courtesy of Total Film. This film has apparently been doing very well at European box offices but this screening at Frightfest was the UK premiere and it is not due for general release here until next April.

I was not sure what to expect as I had not read Stieg Larsson's bestselling book but it exceeded all my expectations.

It is a quite violent, but also strangely compelling murder mystery set against the backdrop of some magnificent Swedish scenery. Whilst it is essentially about solving a 'murder', the heroine is about as far removed from Miss Marple as you can get. It was really refreshing to see such a strong (if very damaged) female lead character.

This is the first of a trilogy based around the same character, and my OH says that it is very true to the book, with only a few minor alterations. I can't wait to see the rest.

From the worldwide bestseller by Stieg Larsson comes this gripping new thriller which will have you guessing until the end. One fateful day several years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared off the secluded island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger family. There was no corpse, no witnesses and no evidence. Nearly forty years later, investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist reluctantly accepts the unusual and seemingly unsolvable assignment of finding out what really happened to Harriet.

Curzon have already invited members to apply for free preview tickets but I wasn't that keen to travel to HMV Wimbledon on a Sunday PM, so I didn't bother. What did puzzle me was that when I tried to look up the film on IMDB, there was some ridiculous release date - or year - like 2012!

The books are pretty good and certainly well-loved so there's high hopes for this film trilogy - it's had a lot of box office success wherever it's been released so far, and they are already making the next 2 films.

Although for those of you who don't like foreign films or subtitles, you could just hang around for the already announced Hollywood remake! (And that hopefully explains the whole 2012 IMDB listing for you, Ms Thrifty...)

I read the books and they are very good indeed, I don't why it took so long for it to be released in the uk.

Probably due to the limited number of prints for the film which then have to be either dubbed or subtitled for each country it gets released in...

The Swedish sequel "Flickan som lekte med elden" (The girl who played with fire) has already been made and is out.
