Saw Jumpy the Play at the Duke of York's yesterday, which was alright. It was a bit too long (the scenes were all very short so there was a lot of story in the roughly 2 hours of the show) but for the most part it was interesting and there were a fair few chuckles too (particularly a scene in act 1 just before the interval). Tamsin Greig really carried the play and the actress playing her daughter was suitably irritating, everyone else was a bit forgetable though. 7/10

Saw Vieux Carre on Friday (not free but discounted by 75%). As usual with Tennessee Williams, not exactly uplifting material but the usual highly developed characterisations of vulnerable people that you come to care about, along with a feeling of a time and a place. Also for those interested in Tennessee Williams himself very interesting to see an autobiographical play with the main role based upon himself. A solid production and worth far better than the nearly empty theatre. Well worthwhile grabbing a £5 ticket before it closes.

Saturday was Henry V. Much of this was as to be expected for those of us who had seen The Revenger’s Tragedy, the production running side by side with Henry featuring the same six actors, or even The Importance of Being Earnest with the same director. Who expects to come out of a Jacobean tragedy humming Duran Duran anyway? Good use was made of current day props such as mobile phones, a laptop, music and a TV screen. Also any one who had seen the poster featuring a smiling Tony Blair would be unsurprised by the Iraq war setting. What I was totally unprepared for was how some of the content affected me in a very different way to the original ‘straight’ play. Some scenes made uncomfortable viewing and I will never again be able to view this play in the same way. The material was brought far closer to home and it made me want to go and see a ‘straight’ production again as soon as possible for comparison.

This is definitely not one for the purists and I know some keen theatregoers who would have hated it, but my friend and I both loved it. While no doubt cashing in on well pursued ideas, it is an intelligent & thought provoking adaptation. Entertaining but also rather unsettling.

From Whats on Stage newsletter

Now, to business! The great ongoing game of West End musical chairs took another twist recently with the announcement that Shrek The Musical is closing at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane on 24 February 2013, making way for the new stage adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (which had previously been destined for the Palladium).

Meanwhile, Mamma Mia reopens this week at its new home the Novello, whileSpamalot plays its last performance at the Harold Pinter on Sunday before moving to the Playhouse in November. And it still remains to be seen whether recent reports that Rock of Ages will downsize from the Shaftesbury to the Duchess will prove true (but you can be sure to read it first at Whatsonstage.com if they do).
Preferred Cinema's now Paignton or Exeter!

Tim Howar is the new Stacee Jaxx, Dan Fletcher is Dennis Dupree, and Leanne Garretty is "young groupie". That's all the casting they'll be doing as a few actors will be doubling up on roles and they're losing the 3rd covers.

I'm hoping that SFF will give away tickets to Hedda Gabler at the Old Vic. I read a couple of other plays by Ibsen and liked them, so I would like to see this play.

I don't think it's very likely. It has Sheridan Smith in the lead and I assume for that alone is selling well. I too would love SFF tickets for it though ^_^

Oh, I had no idea that the lead actress was famous. :(

She was a soap actress first but in theatre land she's probably best known as Elle Woods in Legally Blonde (for which she won an Olivier), though she's done other plays as well.
