There weren't any reviews from the professional critics back then.
Not saying people can't make up their own opinions, just that there may be an inherent influencing factor.

Sinister premiered at Frightfest and there was definitely lots of reviews/critics back then ;)

I think they must have shown a different cut of the film in early September as all those people here who saw it then thought it was rubbish whereas those who have seen it in the last week are giving scores of 6 and above.
I don't think so, can't imagine how bad it was if there was a worse cut than this  . I just was so bored by the end of it that I couldn't be bothered to give it a review.
This made When The Lights Went Out look like a masterpiece and have a new appreciation for that getting a lot more right than this managed to, and from a true story to boot.

The best bit of the film was when ethan hawke was speaking by skype to the expert the first time round and all of a sudden a woman shout from the back "It's HIM!, it's HIM!!" making everyone in the audience jump and then realise she was actually picking on someone for having their phone on which had gone off but not loudly enough for some of us to have heard. So the only real 'jumpy' bit in the film came from a hilarious woman shouting in the audience in the middle of a film. :D

O.I.C. :p

Oh well, horror movies aren't to everyone's taste. If memory serves, even Insidious got mostly great reviews back when it was released and that shite still managed to make it into my Bottom 10 for the year (irony of that statement not intended).

Saw Woman in Black a few days ago and found it equally irritating. That whole 'sudden darkness, gradual silence followed by a loud scare' formula becomes predictably tiring after a while, and both WiB and Sinister are guilty of using it to death. The only credit I can give Sinister is that I did kind of enjoy the music.

I am no fan of horror myself, I haven't seen Insidious and I sincerely hated Woman in Black (and am ashamed to say I have seen it twice; who refuses Premiere tickets, right?). My biggest problem with WiB was the horrendous miscast of the lead. I have nothing against old school horror trickeries and think they still work quite well. In the case of Sinister they were not even cheesy!

My last horror was Possession and it was probably to horror movies what Taken 2 is to Taken, if that make sense! Never a good thing when the audience belly laughs when supposed to be scared!

Thing about Insidious is that it was directed by James Wan - creator of the Saw series - and (this is where I lose all sense of credibility) I loved Saw 1 to bits and even though the series was quite a contrived mess, all 7 of them were loads of fun, even the shitty ones. Not exactly scary, but great, gory fun - infinitely more enjoyable than the PG-13 scary flicks of today. As you can tell, I subscribe heavily to the ideology that horror movies need to be R-rated at least.

Woman in Black was even more disappointing for me because it was written by Jane "Kick-Ass/X-Men: First Class" Goldman. How could she get it so wrong?

tut tut it was adapted by Jane, the play is soooooo much better.
I don't like gore but I remember loving Saw (haven't seen the others)!

Sorry ma'am. Should have said "adapted". ;)
I suddenly recall reading something about Jane changing the ending making it a little more
happy
, relatively at least.

we're getting a bit off topic now (sorry beate), but you should definitely see the play, you can usually get good seats (front stalls) for £25
