Canterbury is one of my favourites and ticks your boxes but maybe you've already been there and forgot to include it?
And Bath, of course, which although further away is quite quickly reached by train. Great Xmas market, too!

Blenheim Place near Oxford is great if you haven't done that yet. Alternatively, Dover and Leeds Castle in Kent are always worth a visit and you can easily spend a day in any of these locations.

Few more random suggestions for you... Painshill Park near Cobham in Surrey has nice walking trails (small charge to get in), then there's Arundel castle, not too far from London, and for events coming up you could check out the Lewes Bonfire night (Sussex), it's quite "interesting".

Just had a wonderful few days in Copenhagen and I want to say a massive thanks to Octopus for all your tips you certainly made sure that I made the most of my time there
Arrived late Thursday evening so just had a stroll around the area near to the hotel.
Friday got up bright and early and headed off through the beautiful shops in the city centre on our way to catch the train to Malmo across the Oresund bridge what a pretty city with very gentle warm people, we saw the twisting torso on the front and then just mooched around the town centre and couldn't resist b*ying a quaint Christmas decoration (didn't think about how I would fit it into my hand luggage - literally by the skin of my teeth) then had to stop for coffee and cakes in a beautiful little cafe.
Saturday we went to visit Amilenborg Palace (where the Queen lives) and Rosenborg Palace (a real fairytale castle complete with a moat) both fairly small but very pretty. We then took a stroll to see the Little Mermaid (she is little) and the Marble church. After dinner we went to see the Black Diamond as recommended by Octopus and actually saw manuscripts by Hans Christian Anderson plus envelopes decorated with pictures by Matisse - it was a wonderful experience as although I have seen the original paintings in Musee D'Orsay it was his personal letters to friends.
Sunday we went to see Christiana - another recommendation by Octopus What an alternative place - a self funding free state a presume its a hippie commune where you could b*y crafts and various plants if you get my drift 
I was more than happy walking through there but my daughter felt uncomfortable. Then we went to http://www.glyptoteket.dk/ and had our lunch in the picturesque winter gardens which was a lovely way to finish our trip. I couldn't resist a trip to the Georg Jensen flagship store and got the most stunning Christmas decoration with our last Kronas plus a necklace from Noa Noa - we sacrificed a meal out to b*y them so had £2 pizzas at the airport. All in all a fabulous few days. A massive thanks to Octopus for all your tips

Sounds as tho' you've been having a ball, Diane! 
I went to Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt and just lay in the sun . . . sounds boring compared to other folk's adventures but I really needed a break from everyone and their demands. I tipped the pool towel man and the pool barman on my 1st day and was well-provided for all holiday. Best £10 I've spent!
Strangely we had 2 days with some rain and cloud but it was still warm and we (the British) still sat round the pool. Others scuttled off to rooms. We sat there in our swim wear waiting for the rain to go off . . . ever optimistic!
I went to Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt and just lay in the sun

It doesn't sound boring at all as we all have different ways of relaxing - my holidays are many people's nightmare but I get energised by all the new experiences but I'm more than happy sitting around reading a book by the pool (I can only last a couple of hours and then I start to fidget). Glad you had a fun time.
