I just watched the trailer and I am (again) very relieved I somehow managed to avoid watching it before the film..

I was gripped! A great, tense thriller, all the more for being based on a true story. 9/10

Caught Argo tonight courtesy of SFF. Evoked memories of Apollo 13 which was also based on true events but managed to keep the tension ratcheted so high that it made you doubt the outcome even though you might know it. Superb filmmaking. Affleck is now 3 for 3 as a director. Will certainly feature in my Top Ten at the end of 2012.
Re: Argo
First part of the movie about the storming of the US embassy was brilliantly done as were the scenes of the Islamic revolution in Tehran. Really brought back the memories of the hostage crisis - Jimmy Carter's perceived weakness in handling the crisis resulted in Reagan winning the presidential election.
9/10

Re: Argo
watched argo tonight, awesome movie! have to give respect where its due and praise Affleck on this one! edge of my seat for a very long and enjoyable time! Reckon he's ticking all the boxes with his films, good story driven film, supported by a great cast. some intense moments were broken up by Hilarious performances from John Goodman and Alan Arkin. and its easy to invest in the characters with the well invested light sarcastic humour at key moments. most of the banter being thrown at you by Affleck and Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston. 9/10
Re: Argo
OH and I enjoyed this last night, and as it's not often that he attends a preview with me, I'm glad we both liked it. I can't rate it quite as highly as others have done but it was certainly a solid 8/10 for me, and mercifully, not as nerve-wracking as I'd feared.
A couple of things struck me as slightly odd: firstly, the "history lesson" at the start. No-one else has expressed a view about this but I wonder if it was necessary or advisable? For those unfamiliar with the background, it would have been a lot of information to absorb in a short space of time and in any case, I think people would simply accept the situation as presented to them - i.e. these people were fugitives and in need of rescue - especially against the background of the siege of the embassy and hostage-taking. Secondly, whilst it was based on real events and I don't wish to discount the experience of those involved, the film could easily have been complete fiction as it seemed to me entirely typical of its genre. In a way I suppose that's a testament to Hollywood, i.e. that the occasional injection of truth is not stranger than fiction but resembles it.

Re: Argo
I've never been a big fan of Ben Affleck either as an actor or director. I have to say that has now changed and hats off to that man. Thoroughly enjoyed this movie. The "real" footage was fitted in perfectly and really brought home how terrifying a time this was for the Embassy staff. Can't fault any of the actors as all were perfectly suited to the characters they were cast as. As has been said in previous reviews, even knowing in advance how this film was going to end didn't stop the feeling of tension from beginning to end.
My only critisism is that having had the first 3 minutes without sound at the Cineworld Renfrew Street, it would have been nice if they had started the film from the beginning once that problem had been solved. Don't know what we missed audio wise but in the end it didn't spoil my enjoyment of the movie. 8/10
Oh, and 83 year old Daddy Bill really enjoyed the movie too!

Re: Argo
Loved the film, thought it was great and agree with all the positive points already made.
Saw it at the Shaftesbury ave cineworld. Got their pretty early as have previously discovered that they tend to show it in a small screen and over-ticket for the screenings. Me and the OH were thankfully the first ones there I think and started the queue. I don't know why they keep using screen 5, it's terrible. Way too small and cramped and it always turns into a sauna. Was boiling!
Other things that frustrate me with that screen is that you can always hear the sound from the next screen bleeding through! Also got increasing frustrated with a rather large guy sat near by who throughout the movie stuffed his face with every food substance that came in a noisy packet, with full inclusion of rustling plastic bags. I know it's free movie and I shouldn't complain but that's just me! I think the fact that he also seemed oblivious to his body odor was another bad point and was pretty distracting at times....
Anyway rant over, great movie! 9/10
