The Sapphires
Re: The Sapphires
I guess I'm in the minority but I thought the film was just OK. I thought too many of the Vietnam scenes made war out to be a barrel of laughs which bothered me. I'm afraid that the charms of Chris O'Dowd are lost on me -- so you folks can have him.
Typical that the tickets for Holloway had the wrong time and it was annoying for everyone to have to sit around for almost half an hour but at least we weren't in the tiny, rubbish screen at the end of the corridor.

Re: The Sapphires
Still sounds like one I'd like to see, so I'm hoping for further previews as there's a while yet before the release. First preview clashed with Argo (for me, anyway) and couldn't really justify the fare to London for one film today, so might have to wait and p*y idc. Shame I missed a good FMUK turnout, too, but thought most regulars would have gone to earlier previews!

Re: The Sapphires
I loved this too. Went to see it purely for Chris O'Dowd (who was phenomenal) and the music (which was also wonderful) but I quickly grew fond of all the characters (in very different ways). The story was fantastic too. I didn't know anything about it and had purposely avoided the trailer so was plesantly surprised when they touched upon so many difficult subjects such as the forgotten children (a piece of Australian history which I've always been intrigued by).
The last half hour or so was quite emotional as I went from crying about one to thing to crying about the next; the characters and their stories had really touched me.
Was very interesting to read that the film was based upon real life events and seeing the photos of the women who story it's based on added just that little bit extra. Also interesting to note is that their story was first turned into a play a few years ago by the son of one of the "Sapphires". Deborah Mailman (Gail) starred in the play too.
One of my favourites for this year so far: 9/10
Hehe just filling in the SFF survey and they ask "What attracted you to this film?" One of the options you can select is "Chris O'Dowd", they know me so well

Re: The Sapphires
What a great film to watch on a cold, wet sunday morning.Took the family to see this at Southampton Odeon which was about 3/4 full and we all had a great time. The story was absorbing the songs were great and could have easily enjoyed more, the time just flew.It was nice to read at the the end what the girls and their family had been up to and to see what they look like today.

Re: The Sapphires
So, so emotional. Really enjoyed this, the songs, the sugary sweet story. It caught me in all moods, it made me cry, made me laugh and made me tap to the music. I love soul. 10/10
Lovely to see so many FMUKers too!
Also 10/10 for the customer service too at Odeon Covent Garden. My mum had her walking stick and her arm in a cast, and the girl at the screen door showed us the disabled lifts and took us up it to the screen and then even came back at the end of the film to help us back out again.

Re: The Sapphires
The screening at Leeds Showcase yesterday morning was poorly attaended which was disappointing. The film itself was enjoyable and exactly the right type of film to watch on a Sunday morning to create a nice relaxing mood for the remainder of the weekend> An appealing storyline told in a typical Australian manner. Both Chris O'Dowd and the music were outstanding

Re: The Sapphires
Really enjoyed this, even after having to wait outside for the doors to open on a cold Sunday morning at Wester Hailes.
Loved the music, the story, the Vietnam scenes and I thought Chris O'Dowd was brilliant.
Best soundtrack since The Commitments.

Re: The Sapphires
Hello. This is use first film I've been to see whilst being a member of fmuk. Definitely a good first film to see, Chris O'Dowd was really good in it and I loved the music, what amazing voices!
I went to the showcase in Leicester to see this. Hoping to get tickets to see other films soon, it's just a shame that there doesn't seem to be as many previews shown in Leicester as there are in some other cities.
I would give this a 7/10

Re: The Sapphires
Saw the film at Southampton Odeon on Sunday morning. The cinema was perhaps half full but the film was well received and I think gave a fair snapshot of the Aboriginal struggle though given the PG rating wasn't too heavy. What sells this film is the solid 60s soundtrack though most people will be coming for Chris O'Dowd.
