ladams888 that was a really good synopsis of the film...thank you.
I saw this at a packed Odeon in Milton Keynes. I quite enjoyed it, I suppose I would give it 7/10

What is a good synopsisladams888 wrote:Saw this last night in Wimbledon. It started as a very dark film about a bi-polar man (Pat) who had just been released from a psychiatric hospital. At one point I kept thinking I was watching a Jerry Springer show - what with everybody overreacting, shouting, screaming and being unnecessarily violent to anyone and anything. It soon became apparent that Pat's actions all stemmed from his violent OCD father (brilliantly played by Robert de Niro), who had probably never been diagnosed OCD and who simply spent his life browbeating and bullying everyone around him. Pat's life changes when he meets Tiffany who is also bi-polar but who manages (with some difficulty) to give him something to aim for (a dancing competition). This is probably the first time in his life that Pat has not been dominated by his NFL-loving father, and although not a brilliant dancer, you could see that he was enjoying the dancing and the commitment that came with it.
I left the cinema thinking that I didn't particularly enjoy the film, however, with hindsight, it tackled family rivalries and mental illness in a very positive and thought-provoking way. 7/10
Bravo

i'm not sure it suggests it's a cure but they do have a point!raj101 wrote:yeeeuup the cure for mental illness, dancing, love and jogging. Wish it was that easy lol. Films usually end up implying miracle cures like that.
i saw it at kingston last night and wished i'd seen it at wimbledon. there were four girls sat in the downstairs bit who totally ruined it, talking, laughing and screeching. if i'd not have been sat in the middle i would have gone and told them to shut up or i would have had someone remove them... sadly no one else bothered to do this and they ruined the entire bloody thing for me.
i will go and see it again. it was a good film and you have to love a bit of B.C

I plan to see Mental tomorrow - will be interesting to compare the treatment of mental illness in the two films.

Just posted my review. It's an alright film, I echo what people are saying about the weird tonal shift towards the end. The film spends a lot of time saying that this is an impossibly complex situation with no easy solutions. But then we find out that actually there are easy solutions and ties everything up in a neat little bow. A happy ending and roll credits. A bit of a let down.

As much as I love and adore Jennifer Lawrence and as incredible as she is here, this film didn't sit well with me for a number of reasons. It should be more than the average rom-com it actually is.

I actually really loved it - but as a native Philadelphian, it's hard to know how much it's because they really got the details of Philly right!
