In Venice, you can wander over the Rialto Bridge and view the Grand Canal. Head to St Mark's Square. Or splash out and enjoy that most romantic of experiences, a ride in a gondola, but to keep costs down, you can share! Burano is famous for its lace and brightly coloured houses. Murano is famous for its glass, and you can see glass blowing demonstrations. I can't remember which restaurant it was that all the famous film stars have been to dined. My honeymoon was a long time ago! But I agree with TheDude, too hot and crowded that time of year. :P

Diane65 wrote:Thanks so much for all the information and I don't have to go in July it was just after she finishes her A levels but we could go early September for her birthday instead. It would be a shame to go there and for it to be too hot and stuffy to enjoy the break. Burano looks like an Italian version of Balamory ;) it looks so pretty - I just love places like that. Murano looks just gorgeous you have certainly inspired me and got me rethinking on dates. Where are you off to? There are so many places I want to visit Italy (along with lots of other places). Thanks once again o/
Ah, early September is perfect, just in time for the Venice film festival! Burano is lovely and a nice change of pace from the hustle & bustle of Venice. You can do Murano, Burano and even a quick stop on Lido (for the beach) all in one day on the water bus/ferry circular route, if I remember correctly. My trip starts in Bari, staying a few days there, followed by a train journey down the coast, not sure where exactly yet, but I know it won't be too glamorous... :D

Has anyone been to Cologne? I'm going next month for 3 days with my DD, my friend and her 13 year old granddaughter and 10 year old grandson - they (the children) have never been abroad before so I want to make it very special for them so far in my list of ideas is https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j ... 7550,d.d2k for our day out of Cologne, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fragrance_museum, https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j ... 7550,d.d2k and http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Attraction ... halia.html. Does this sound like enough, not enough or a bit boring? We will go shopping, try the German food etc - I'm from an all female environment (OH is a man but I meant I have 2 daughters and one sister, went to an all girls school and at work it's over 90% women) so have no experience with what would be exciting for a 10 year old boy and he's too polite to say otherwise. Thanks for any help o/

I don't know about the Fragrance Museum, that would probably even bore me let alone a 10 year old boy, but Cologne has a brilliant zoo, you can spend all day there, and of course you have to take a cruise on the Rhine, you can't leave that out.

Thanks for that Beate now rethinking - Like I said I have no idea whatsoever and really do want to make it lovely for them. The girl is very girlie and loves her perfumes hence the fragrance idea. We've been to London for the day with them and he loved it in Kensington palace as they were doing about Queen Victoria at school. I don't want to wear them out either which I can tend to do.

I've been to Cologne (Koln) 3 or 4 times. Couldn't tell you anything much about it as I went during WYD 05 so it was swamped with people. It is the fourth largest city in Germany. I do remember the cathedral as it is huge. And we spent a lot of time in the Irish pub we found there. Also we went to Dusseldorf by train from Cologne as it's not far. So I have asked my ex (who is German and used to lived in Koln but now lives in Edinburgh) if she could enlightened me what I did whilst I was there. Sorry I have been unhelpful.

A boat trip on the river is very relaxing, all they have to do is sit down and watch the world go by!

I was only in Cologne for half a day as part of a several week long road trip but remember loving just wandering around as they had really cute buildings that are super thin but really high, fun little shops (including for instance wooden toy shops and a Christmas shop) and of course the waterside.

Also, the chocolate museum should be interesting for everyone in the party ;)

My OH and I got back from London last night- and i need new feet!! Didnt manage to do the Royal Observatory although it was on our list :( Joined in with the chinese new year celebrations at Trafalgar Square and got soaked! The highlight, for me, was being two feet away from James McAvoy - i managed to contain myself! Think the highlight for OH was standing outside the MI5 or MI6 building, i cant remember which  and he managed to contain himself too!
