Beautiful Creatures

#1 Post by canadian_turtle » Sun Feb 17, 2013 9:28 am

Read the book for this ages ago which was absolutely rubbish yet the pretty posters in the underground tempted me to watch the film yesterday though I really should've known better.

Quoting part of my book review as it applies to the film too:

For the most part I thought the novel was dragged out into an overlong tale where I never really connected or felt interested in any of the characters central to it. The background to the story behind Ethan and Lena is, while not entirely original, surely an interesting one but because the authors do not get to the point until pretty much the last few chapters I simply felt bored throughout.

On top of that I thought the actress who played Lena was absolutely terrible, she surely rivals Kristen Stewart in the "moody" / one facial expression department! Ethan was actually pretty alright (hated him in the book) and provided some much needed comedic scenes (when he was being toyed with by Ridley for instance). And some of the caster scenes looked pretty although way too CGI-ed.

5.5/10 - there were some entertaining bits, but they were far and few in between. At least I didn't doze of or feel quite as bored as I did when reading the book!

Also, for those who are tempted to watch this film, be warned that this is a book series, not a stand alone story. There are 4 published so far...

sounds a lot like that rubbishy cancelled witches tv series that was on last year with the awful acting/plot/etc/everything.

I thought I saw Emma Thompson in the trailer but I must surely be mistaken.
fav 5 films of the year - Tenet, Bill n Ted 3, Invisible Man, JoJo Rabbit, ?

You're not mistaken, she's got quite a large role in it. As do Jeremy Irons and Emmy Rossum!

I found this entertaining in a trashy, pulpy kind of guilty pleasure kind of way.

Sunday afternoon entertainment with some enjoyable performances. Hardly the worst film I have seen this year.

This was god awful, agreeing with CT, hated Lena, thought she was a complete bitch! Ethan was good, the only thing that added some humour, Emma Thompson clearly enjoyed her role as the bad guy! Didn't think there was much point in having the other characters (like her sister), in the film they just felt like filler...
The whole background and story wasn't really there and any mention of caster seemed rushed or overlooked.
Definitely not a good start to a new franchise, I'll be surprised if they make a second tbf :/

Yeah they're cousins, but grew up together like sisters.
