Re: Searching for Sugar Man
Back from Glasgow. Like previously mentioned people were arriving as the film had started. And it was pretty busy.
Film was a slow burner to start as it build the story up. And I got more into as the film progress. It is not my type of film but I'm glad to have seen it now. The soundtrack was good throughout and it was lovely to see how the film progress. However where did all the royalties go? 6/10

Re: Searching for Sugar Man
Unfortunately the big surprise element is lost at a second viewing but it's nevertheless a riveting documentary, with the last half hour particularly strong.
WIQ was quite full tonight, but lots of latecomers again. They'll never learn.

What a lovely heartwarming film.
I unfortunately knew the twist already, but it didn't really spoil it for me.
I had a huge smile on my face for the last hour of the film as Rodriguez was shown meeting every up and down in his life with great humility and positivity.
A fantastic, uplifting film which like a few other Bafta movies is another one those 'so crazy you couldn't make it up stories'

Re: Searching for Sugar Man
nice film about the triumph of character over materialism, though you could interpret it many other ways too.
What a fitting name Sugarman is for a film about Mr Rodriguez, smiling all the way through the movie when he was seen. He never once was depicted as a misery guts or even moping for a moment. Reminds me of the attitude of Phillipino nurses who practically run our wards without raising a moments fuss.

told off before the film startedDiane65 wrote:I found this quite endearing. Sat behind a rather rude lady who asked myself and akh43 if we would be talking throughout the film as she would appreciate it if we didn't, we were chatting quietly before the film had startedI told her that we don't like people chatting throughout the film ourselves then she insisted on keep on wafting her hair around throughout the film and sticking her feet into the aisle luckily no one tripped over her. 7/10

I do not think that the "sugar" referred to is the type you put in your tea.
:)
The film explains that sugarman is a drugs dealer.

A bit off topic but did you hear that a lot of the screenings at Sundance this year mobile phone use was prevalent at screenings!

I'd leave you to think I didn't notice the drugs interpretation, but I aint like that.lalala wrote:raj101 wrote:nice film about the triumph of character over materialism, though you could interpret it many other ways too.

Re: Searching for Sugar Man
Luckily I didn't know anything about this story before seeing this film apart from a sweet old man who sat next to me who told me Rodriguez was as big as Elivis and committed suicide on stage.
Smiled all throughout the last half of the film and now want to b*y the sound track but not if my money's going to go into Clarence Avant lol!

Re: Searching for Sugar Man
Just got this email from Studiocanal:
International folk legend Rodriguez will be headlining the Main Stage on Saturday 6th July at this year's Hop Farm Music Festival
Following the incredible success of Searching for Sugar Man, Rodriguez will be gracing the main stage at this year's festival.
The documentary, Searching for Sugar Man, tells the tale of two South Africans who set out to discover what happened to their unlikely musical hero, the mysterious 1970s rock 'n' roller, Rodriguez. It has since gone on to win an Academy Award and a BAFTA and is set for inconceivable success. If you haven't seen it yet you can watch the official trailer below.
Remarkably, during the final stages of filming the documentary the director Malik Bendjelloul ran out of money for more film, he resorted to filming the remaining stylized shots on his smartphone using an iPhone app to complete the film.
As well as the film having huge success Searching for Sugar Man, the 2012 soundtrack album climbed surprisingly high for a soundtrack album (in Sweden it reached #3). The album contains a compilation of songs by Rodriguez from his two studio albums, and will no doubt take pride of place upon Rodríguez' set list for this summer.
We're sure you'll agree that Rodriguez playing at the Hop Farm is an amazing accolade, one we are super proud of and we certainly looking forward to him bringing the house down in Kent this summer!
We have Searching For Sugar Man DVD's and soundtrack CD's up for grabs, for your chance to win please answer the following question;
Q: Where was Rodriguez born?
A: Dallas
B: Detroit
C: Denver
Please send answers to hopfarmfestival@vpmg.net or answer the question on our Facebook wall.
