Re: Easy Money
Almost full audience at Glasgow Quay this evening though film shown in smallest screen, only holding 50+ folk.
2 walkouts after about 30 minutes.
I have to say I did read some reviews from Tuesday's screenings and didn't expect to like this film . . . but I did! I found the film quite engrossing and liked seeing the different story lines crossing and merging. I did have some sympathy for JW . . . apart from being distinctly different with blonde hair and no beard . . . he was a real innocent abroad! A man of ambition who did not have the money to match which caused his eventual downfall!

Re: Easy Money
Well he has the hairdo for it. I'd probably watch that as it might be easier to decipher what's going on. I usually cope well with subtitles too, but these were part unreadable and too many too quickly so I missed a fair bit of dialogue.

I'm sure I'll watch it as well, if only to see how he tackles the genre.Beate wrote:Well he has the hairdo for it. I'd probably watch that as it might be easier to decipher what's going on. I did find the subtitles difficult at times, though I could see that they had a drop shadow on them to try to mitigate it, but it wasn't quite there.
You would think, though, that given three years to get it right they would have.

I'm sure there was a typo in there as well, it said 'however' at one point when the sentence made more sense with 'whoever'.caitlinmorton wrote:I'm sure I'll watch it as well, if only to see how he tackles the genre.Beate wrote:Well he has the hairdo for it. As for the film I'm struggling to remember much about it a few days after seeing it although I do know that Liechtenstein is now the place to go to launder money!

Re: Easy Money
my guess it is about the life in prison and JW's continued descent into the gangsta underworld. & finding his missing sister. that detailed tatooing suggesting he is really getting into prison life & thinking obsessively about her - that was his sister's name, right?.
caitlinmorton wrote: wondering what the (two!) sequels would entail.
i liked it (mostly). i had no trouble following the plot & subtitles. i liked how it walked a fine line between glamourising the extreme violence vs. a cautionary tale for greedy children.

Re: Easy Money
Having read the book I found it surprising that they didn't cover the subplot involving JWs sister in more detail (to be honest I did drift off a couple of times. Was she mentioned other than him telling Sophie she'd gone missing and showing his tattoo?). It plays a much greater part in the book, including the reasons for how JW reacts in the warehouse at the end. Perhaps they are saving that for the sequel.
Warning for the following spoiler just in case they do that and you haven't read the book.
JWs sister worked as a prostitute for Mrado and Nenad and ended up getting killed by them. JW doesn't know this and spends a lot of the book investigating her disappearance. Jorge finds out the truth in his dealings with a brothel and another prostitute that goes missing. He finds a video on a laptop he steals of her murder. When he realises that JW has double crossed him in the warehouse he tells him about the video and what happened to Clarissa. This makes JW turn against Mrado and Nenad
Re: Easy Money
Saw this in Islington last night, and really enjoyed it. I loved the use of music in the film and thought that although I didn't really like any of the characters I was still interested to see what happened to them. Agree some of the subtitling was a bit odd, and the hordes of swarthy men led to a little confusion but other than that it was a good film. I didn't see anyone walking out in our screening, although the two girls next to me didn't realise that it was going to be subtitled and talked the whole way through it. Recommended 7.5/10

I always seem to have problems with The Times lot too. They think they are vastly superior but also have the right to talk continuously and last night even flicking their phones on to check the time but taking ages to actually see the time!stuartboy wrote:Oh, and thanks to the two ignorant old bastards in Edinburgh that refused point blank to move to let me pass to a vacant seat and almost tripped me up as I had to climb over them in the dark. Apparantly excuse me please is not in their vocabulary. Times readers? Give me the talking, seat kicking, nacho chomping, mobile using SKY/Virgin/SFF undesirable any day.
Not sure which I prefer: Chavs or snobs.
