One is lined up to be another heavy handed Michael Bay and the other is showing signs of greatness.

i just saw this trailer and it does my heart good after the disappointment of oblivion. I also saw a trailer for 'after earth' which just looks really bad!

I saw this yesterday at Cineworld Boldon. I wasn't sure what to expect, not having watched the trailer, but I was not disappointed. It's a terrific Sci-Fi movie, with an original storyline, strong acting and great special effects. It deals with social issues as well as delivering political intrigue. It's a good Sci-Fi thriller.
Matt Damon, Jodie Foster and Sharlto Copley are outstanding. I have not seen a villain as frightening as Copley's character for quite some time.

I don't want to say too much and spoil it for other people, but I give it 9/10. Possibly the best film I've seen this year.

I thought this was awful.

This was just a mess structurally The attempts at creating emotion were just laughably bad, the messages were faaaar too heavy handed and pretentious. The script was terrible, tons of continuity problems. Really inept direction.

Might be a candidate for one of the worst i've seen this year. The others i atleast had a good time in. Sometimes the scripts and structure were bad, but they were still so much fun. But.....I honestly was getting impatient sitting through Elysium. It was the first time this summer i wanted to leave the cinema early

For me, when you do a story like this, with political influence undercutting a societies ability to function and acting as an allegory for modern times, you BETTER do it right. Or atleast know what the hell you are talking about. This comes across as someone who doesn't understand how society works and has pretentious thoughts and views on the world, and didn't even ATTEMPT to do their research. The characters and dialogue are on the same level as Shyamalan here. Character motivation and story competence go right out the window.

It doesn't work as its own internal story, it doesn't work as an allegory for modern times, it is just bafflingly bad to me

remember the feeling you got leaving the cinema after the Matrix? The director is clearly aiming for that, with the freedom fighting replaced by a fight for equality.

Obviously its not as good as the Matrix (part 1) but it builds a vivid two tier world of cheap tech and expensive tech side by side. A good slice of scifi and well put together plotwise apart from wacky South African guy who I couldn't fathom (yes he had his reasons for his actions, but they weren't compelling enough to do what he did). Didn't suffer from being too long, in fact I would have been happy if it had been a bit longer, so that's a sign it was a well made action movie at least. Jesus allegory was a step too far perhaps - this isn't the Matrix (part 3!!), you know! It helps give the movie an emotional palette, and the last scene could well make you cry (unless you a pro-Elysian rich person of course). Could have done with a bit more humour, mind you.

Best scifi of the year, yes, and a good film for an action buzz too. Not a Matrix for the Tennies, but a good ride nonetheless.
