After having cleverly jiggled my work schedule around I managed to leave early, pick up OH from home and go all the way to Islington. We should have arrived at 6pm but OH is slow and made us miss trains at every corner. By the time we finally arrived, there was an almighty queue snaking around the foyer. We hooked up with tsoiboy and nearly got our favourite seats - by the time I ran up the stairs they were still empty, by the time I arrived they were gone. Grrr. It filled up 100% and then some who got turned away. Didn't see funthing29 but missgotty came to sit next to us.

I didn't like the pace of the story which was too drawn-out, and I hated the Keller character (what a stupid first name is that anyway?) I don't care whether he's just lost a daughter, his actions were unforgivable. The other couple weren't much better really with their "we won't help but we won't hinder him either". That's just as criminal, love. I can't stand these overly religious people who think nothing about beating someone up then saying a prayer afterwards. Even the cop wasn't a very likeable figure - the way he spoke and handled suspects in the interview room was just horrible.

And after all this time spent on the story, we still don't know for example what inner demons the cop was battling when his eyes were flattering, what the snake man had to do with it all (or do we, no one's telling me!), why the kidsnatcher did it and a whole raft of other stuff I am too tired to go into.

15 or so minutes before the end OH decided to go topical and make the film more realistic - he went to the loo and didn't return. I walked out after a while and started searching for him everywhere, with the help of an usher. We finally found him in a nearby screening room, sitting in his favourite seat watching Rush, which was curiously empty. So if someone could PLEASE PM me with what happened after
Keller got shut in the hole in the ground
, I'd be very much obliged. Ta.

Which screening was it tonight where Jake Gyllenhaal and Hugh Jackman introduced the movie?

I think it probably helps to understand the gut-wrenching awfulness of having a child go missing if you have children yourself. It's certainly changed my view on the world. Consequently, I thought it was a very good movie (although the detective seemed too keen to dismiss the evidence of Keller (Hugh Jackman)), it didn't seem over-long to me, in fact I would have quite liked it to on a bit longer as the ending was a little unsatisfactory. I also found it quite moving, particularly when the parents were shown the photos of the children's clothing...

The best word I can use to describe this film is intense. Yes it is long but I think that helps the story in the sense that the audience experiences the same journey as the parents by waiting in anticipation to find out what happens. It is one of those thrillers that is gripping, well-acted and successfully ratchets up the tension til the end. I especially liked the way it jumped between scenes so left the audience to fill in some the gaps. 8/10.

yogi wrote:I was a bit concerned that this was so long after a long day at work, but I loved this.

Gripping, absorbing, tense with great performances all round.

I'm hoping there's plenty of spoiler tags cos I think I may have missed some of the finer details of the plot, but that's no reflection at all on the film.

Interesting how some films only just over 90 minutes can test the patience so much more than a film like this when my attention was gripped throughout. Good call whoever said Zodiac, very similar pace and plotting. 8.5/10
As I'm using my phone I thought I'd share yogi's posting as it says most of what I'd have said. I thought the tension was very noticeable in the cinema as people literal were holding their breath.
Mark 8/10

2 small moans about a few audience members who spoiled the atmosphere at times with checking their phones  and the odd crisp bag cruncher who insisted on scrunching up their BAGS . . .yes, you read that right . . . one person eating several bags . . . very distracting and ruined the silence of the cinema! :wall:

I hear people were being turned away tonight in Glasgow even though there were empty seats in the hall , very strange on Sky's part , one of my party had to wait outside on the other two for a couple hours as they couldn't get in very odd and disappointing too x
