Re: Philomena
Saw this yesterday at wester hailes. Fabulous film. Very well told story and Judy dench and Steve Coogan. Very sad tale but very amusing in parts.
Glad cinema so busy as would have been shame to miss this. Can understand why this has won awards.
Shame you came in late Stuartboy, mum had chocolate and a drink for you. Next time!!

Re: Philomena
Saw this yesterday in (a half-full) Kingston. I had read about the Magdalene laundries some time ago (most probably in the articles written by Martin Sixsmith) and this film showed in graphic details how badly these poor girls were treated. Judi Dench (as always) shone as Philomena Lee in a brilliantly understated yet mesmerizingly moving performance. I don’t normally like Steve Coogan, however he was well suited as the brash ex-BBC reporter who was deeply inspired by Philomena’s story of her lost son. It was lovely to see Anna Maxwell Martin on the big screen at last, a shame her role wasn’t larger. Let’s hope we see much more of her in the future. A poignant film – one that makes you question the role of the convents in our society. Remember to take some tissues with you. 8/10

Re: Philomena
Saw this tonight at a packed Cineworld. Nice to meet up with funthing29 and canadian-turtle who are here in Edinburgh for a few days.
Great film with an outstanding performance from Judi Dench. Wondered why it never mentions the fact that she had got married and had a daughter and perhaps even more children.
More humour in it than expected. 8/10

Re: Philomena
An astonishingly powerful tale expertly played by Steve Coogan, on a role this year after Partridge and What Maisie Knew, and the ever brilliant Dame Judi - I've a feeling Blanchett and Thompson may be joined by another big hitter at the Oscars next year.
As others have said there's quite a bit of humour, but it never detracts from the power of the drama and there's a lovely twist on the Oxbridge misunderstanding that Partridge himself fell for many years ago.
I was gripping my seat throughout and my stomach was churning more than in any horror film, cold fury someone said, cold fury indeed. Astonishing in our lifetime people acting in Jesus' name could be so cruel and inhumane. 9/10
I'm with Steve Coogan, I certainly wouldn't have forgiven - I'd have knocked her off her feckin wheelchair
Saw this in Cineworld Glasgow. Pretty full but there were spaces throughout the cinema.
There was more humour in this than I imagine and it was wonderful timing to the seriousness of the story. I don't recall any of the history so knew nothing before. Nice to see Steve Coogan acting other than being Alan Partridge. 7/10

Elected to see this again tonight after seeing it yesterday so that Mum could see it as the +1 she'd hoped for let her down.

Re: Philomena
Tragic, told with grace and humour. So sad that those horrible women chose to keep Philomena in the dark for all those years. Took a wee while to stop seeing Steve Coogan as a comedian but it worked Judy Dench was just a marvel as that brave and accepting wee lady. I wouldn't have been able to forgive them either.
