Don Jon

Image

Jon Martello (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a strong, handsome, good old fashioned guy. His buddies call him Don Jon due to his ability to "pull" a different woman every weekend, but even the finest fling doesn't compare to the bliss he finds alone in front of the computer watching pornography. Barbara Sugarman (Scarlett Johansson) is a bright, beautiful, good old fashioned girl. Raised on romantic Hollywood movies, she's determined to find her Prince Charming and ride off into the sunset. Wrestling with good old fashioned expectations of the opposite sex, Jon and Barbara struggle against a media culture full of false fantasies to try and find true intimacy in this unexpected comedy written and directed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Director: Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Screenwriter: Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Starring: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Scarlett Johansson, Julianne Moore, Tony Danza, Brie Larson, Glenne Headly
Genre: Romance

Release Date: TBC

Saw this at Berlinale when it was still called 'Don Jon's Addiction'. LOVED IT. Can't wait to go again and see what changes (if any) JGL made!

Saw this at the LFF gala last night and am a bit torn about how to rate it... On the one hand some scenes dragged a bit making it feel long despite it's only 90 minute length, on the other it was very, very funny and I laughed a lot. The characters were great, I especially loved Jon's 'interesting' family and the likeness in characteristics between father and son. 7/10 (I guess?)

I was impressed with JGL's efforts on this one - I could definitely see his directorial flair here, it was a nice succint script and it was not his typical acting role. Perhaps it was a bit gratuitous with the use of the
porn videos
but it flowed well, had a decent character arc, I liked the ending in terms of the story and it had some truly hilarious moments. 8/10.

JGL introduced the film beforehand, he is so funny and charismatic in person!

As a bonus this was my 100th free film this year, woo!

Saw this tonight at Cineworld, Edinburgh and sorry I went as I didn't enjoy it at all. Remove all the porn scenes and you are left with very little in a story line. One for the males in the audience to ogle at but not much else. 2/10

Yawn.

This was rubbish. Very little in the way of story. I was so used to seeing that PLAY icon appearing on the screen (which was mildly amusing the first 20 or so times) that I was so relieved to see the words DON JON appearing instead signifying the end of this drivel.
I can't help but be freaked out by the sight of Tony Danza playing a father too. Also those accents just grated on me.

2/10

Could do better.

Advise you just watch the trailer - save yourself 1.5 hours of your life to do something better with.

Well happy to make it 3 out of 3 from Edinburgh. What a waste of time.. The highlight of the film had to be the end. Yes it will appeal to some folks but not me. Two young folk walked out, smart people!

Would have been better staying home and practicing my ukelele!!

Let's hope Barry Humpreys is better on Thursday.

2/10 from me too
