American Hustle
Saw this yesterday at a BAFTA screening. All the characters were really over the top, and none of them you would find particularly hard not to like at all, from Amy Adams, Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and Jeremy Renner. Gosh, Jennifer Lawrence can so act! Christian Bale was almost unrecognisable. And Robert De Niro does not even appear in the credits. A very dark comedy of con artists, congressmen, mobs and FBI agents, caught in a scam that gets bigger and bigger, and more intricate. Brilliant. It was very long at 2 hours and 18 minutes, but hilarious and riveting to watch, a thriller too! 9/10
Released in London on 20 December and the rest of UK 1 January 2014.

This was so ridiculously good. Saw it yesterday and still not over how much I loved it.
My favourite person in the world Jennifer Lawrence was incredible, as were the rest of the cast (Bradley Cooper in particular...I about died).
I kept hearing that this was going to be the film that would beat 12 Years a Slave in the awards this year, and I didn't believe it, but now I think its going to be the most epic of fights between the two. This deserves all the recognition and praise it gets.

Re: American Hustle
Braved the Christmas crowds to see this earlier this morning and insanely good fun it was too. David O. Russell channelling his inner Scorsese. A late cameo from a certain early Scorsese regular only adding to that fact (yes I know someone else has already mentioned it but I had no idea they were in it and I appreciated the surprise). So yes a director clearly having the time of his life meant the 2hrs 15mins flew past.
A fantastic cast at the top of their game were clearly having a ball too and though all four leads had their chance to shine, I have to admit I was incredibly impressed by Amy Adams. Bale gets the most respect perhaps, due to the unflattering comb-over and bulging stomach, but they were all great. An excellent supporting cast too, quite a few of them I didn't even realise were in it.
I was also surprised at how funny it was. As things start to escalate and get more desperate, it gets even funnier. Bradley Cooper in particular managing to raise more laughs in the last hour of this than he did in all of The Hangover films.
Top 70s soundtrack too (another aspect that highlights the Scorsese comparison).
So overall, a highly entertaining film and a late contender for one of the films of the year.
I'm not so sure of it's awards chances though. It may just be too much fun to stand up to its more weighty rivals, its lack of depth could probably count against it. I'd be happy to be proved wrong however.

Re: American Hustle
I rarely award films 10/10 (I didn't award that score to anything released in UK cinemas during 2013) as for me it represents cinematic perfection, a standard previously set by the likes of Jaws, The Godfather, Goodfellas etc.
Therefore the easiest way I can demonstrate just how much I enjoyed this particular movie is by simply stating that I gave serious consideration to awarding it with that prestigious score.
I thought everyone involved in this was on top form performance wise, I loved the story & I loved the characters and (as mentioned above) overall this movie just felt like a love letter to Martin Scorsese from David O.Russell.
If you haven't already seen this then all I can say is that it's well worth the price of admission and if you have a voucher available then going to see this is an absolute no brainer (IMO
).
As for my score? Well I'm going to go for a conservative 9/10 and will just wait and see whether or not it holds up to repeat viewings later on in the year...

It totally does, I saw it again yesterday and loved it just as much. The atmosphere at Bexleyheath was TERRIBLE though, no one but me was laughing! They livened up towards the middle but the beginning was dead. Not a laugh in there! Nice and quiet though!RAZORBACK wrote:I rarely award films 10/10 (I didn't award that score to anything released in UK cinemas during 2013) as for me it represents cinematic perfection, a standard previously set by the likes of Jaws, The Godfather, Goodfellas etc.
