Veronica Mars The Movie!

#1 Post by pandv2010 » Wed Mar 27, 2013 9:16 pm

Veronica Mars has finally got the Green Light! Can't wait for everything to come together. This is most definitely Kristen Bell at her best in my opinion.

Loved Veronica Mars, was a shame when the series ended. The film will have a lot to live up to.

I love Veronica Mars.
I totally got withdrawal symptoms after the series finished.
Excited about the film...

Am I really the first person to post a review? I was under the impression the download has been live for at least 24 hours already? Bad fans...

Anyway, caught this at Empire Leicester Square tonight (the only cinema showing it in London, pfft) and absolutely loved it. I re-watched the series in the past week so was still in a Veronica Mars bubble and I did already love the show to pieces so obviously I'm biased but I think they did a brilliant job, especially considering the budget.

It probably wasn't the best idea to catch one of the first screenings though as there were hard core fans in the audience giggling (not me), whooping (also not me) and gasping (sometimes me). It was fun to share this moment with them but also somewhat distracting when I'm used to watching the show in complete silence with my headphones on.

As for the film itself, a long time ago we used to be friend and as soon as the movie started I felt I was back with the "gang". It had the same noir feel and quick wit us fans loved from the original series, with a mystery big enough to keep audiences entertained for this feature length version of a normal episode. A lot of old favourites are back and are on top form, besides the leads I thought Ryan Hansen was particularly excellent, and I was (sometimes pleasantly, sometimes not so much) surprised by where everyone had ended up nearly 10 years after the series ended. I really, really loved it and was on the edge of my seat for most of it - as a lot of the storylines could go either way, making this an exciting film from start to finish.

I have no idea how well it translates to non-fans of the show though. There's an introduction nicely recapping the series and the murder mystery is pretty straight-forward and easy to follow but what makes this franchise so special are the characters and there were a lot of fun little throwbacks for fans in terms of characters, quotes and even the music. Nothing the average movie-goer would notice or be bothered by, but a big part of why I loved this so much.

If you see the film in cinema make sure you sit through the credits too. There's a little something extra both midway and at the end + it's nice to see the message about Kickstarter as well :)

Interesting to see your review, c_t, as though I'd never heard of VM until recently, I've had my eye on this film. It sounds as though a non-fan would be OK re the back-story; my issue at present is simply trying to find a suitable performance as Empire L Sq is the only cinema in London showing this and apart from being fearfully expensive (their idea of an off-peak deal is £9.99, though if those independent cinema tix I b*ght with the deal Alythonian posted arrive in time, I could use one for this), the earliest performance they have is 1.15 pm, which is way too late to fit in before a theatre matinee.

Maybe it will do so well on word-of-mouth that it will spread to other cinemas from Friday? And there must be other VM fans, i.e. from the original tv series, here?

I hope you manage to slot it in Ms Thrifty! Here's a critic review which covers the appeal for non-fans:

Watching this film really transported me back to the days of the TV series. I was a huge fan when it originally aired on TV and was sad when it got cancelled but pleased that the fans managed to revive the characters in a movie version.

As expected there are a lot of references and in-jokes with regards to the show but I think this is not a big obstacle for new viewers. The clever one-liners and sharp dialogue is a direct continuation from the show as are the mannerisms of the characters. Nostalgic, witty, biting, clever and entertaining - a real treat for the Marshmallows (aka Veronica Mars fans). 8.5/10.

Ooh, I am a bad fan - didn't realise it had been released and didn't realise only Empire would be showing it in London. How frustrating. Will try to catch it there though. Want to see it on the big screen and it sounds like it doesn't disappoint so could be worth p*ying for.
