300: Rise of an Empire

Caught this last night at the BFI IMAX.

Eva Green and some of the other starts were meant to introduce it but that didn't happen but it was still an enjoyable evening with muscular men dressed as gladiators, drinks and nibbles.

This was pretty much what I was expecting (i.e. OTT and daft) but it was still reasonably entertaining. It intersects nicely with the first film and is also easy to follow for new audiences. It is quite a hotch potch of accents (varying from British, Australian, South African and some other twangs which was distracting) and it is exposition heavy at the start but one can switch their brain off and enjoy the action, special effects and excellent use of 3D (especially noticeable in IMAX). 6.5/10.

Didn't see it in Imax, the normal 3D was pretty poor I thought. The film was entertaining enough but not a patch on "300".

The standout was Eva Green who was fantastic and has great "negotiating skills" ( as has Sullivan Stapleton).

Very poor 3d, half the time I thought it was out of focus at the Imax.

Everything was so dark as usual with 3D. I don't understand why they bother. YOu've only got to look at the vibrant colours in Spartacus, with all the blood splashing around, to realise 3d isn't necessary.

Despite really liking Sullivan Stapleton, he didn't really make the film for me, however Eva Green was brilliant, really enjoying herself out there. One actor was really familiar and when I looked him up later, I found out he was from Casualty .
Not a patch on 300 though.

Now, we had drinks and nibbles at the Imax, plus men in leather pants to have your picture taken with No I didn't. Best of all was the goodie bag, with a really cool notebook, a well made keyring and a bloody squishy mouse mat

I think the darkness and lack of colours are the style of the film, I think it's meant to be mostly sepia. I was quite grateful that the blood was almost black, wouldn't want to see bright as much red stuff sloshing about.

Saw this last night and although it wasn't as good as the original film I still thought it was reasonably entertaining.

I thought Xerxes's backstory was interesting and liked that we were given regular reminders how events in this film fitted in time wise with the previous flick.

I will say that the biggest problem the sequel has is that the new characters it introduces (with one exception) are relatively lifeless and this for me is the reason that the sequel isn't nearly as engaging as the original.

However, Eva Green is quite simply fantastic in this movie and consequently manages to make watching it a worthwhile experience for her performance alone.

Overall this is a decent fantasy flavoured action flick that does just enough to get a 7/10 from me...

yeah true. but the 3d makes it even darker sadly vx

this movie is basically a lesson in how to destroy a potential megafranchise (ie 300/Spartacus type) in 90 minutes, apart from Eva Green who is at least having some raspingly good fun.

don't make another.

I prefered the straight forward story of the first film however if you loved the first you'll still like this one.

yes, it relates heavily to Part 1 - most of it feels like a mass of deleted scenes from the first movie.

Compared to the original this is quite bland. Most of the characters bar Eva Green are just a bit blah. 5/10.
