I've also heard of Golgotha. But I know it more as Calvary, just hadn't realised it was more us Brits that used it.

I recognised Brendan Gleeson, Kelly Reilly and Paddy Considine, of course, and am not for a moment suggesting that they are seen too frequently. But I did not know the actors playing the doctor, publican or alcoholic businessman - though I am sure they are familiar to others.
Paddy Considine wasn't in it, you might be thinking of Aiden Gillen? But then he was the one playing the doctor, do you mean the one in the bow tie?
Oh dear, I know I like Paddy Considine but I meant Chris O'Dowd! (Perhaps I was distracted by thinking about the imminent release of Honour, which does feature PC.)

And yes, by the medic I meant the cynical chap in the bow tie. So many characters seemed to have something against the poor priest, but I suppose that was part of the puzzle.

Cheers for giving your score some context (in relation to the director's work), decided that with the clocks going forward that I'd give the preview yesterday a miss but as I still want to see this movie was a bit disappointed to see it pick up such a low score.

However, since your post there's been some positive feedback for Calvary so hopefully watching this (at a later date) won't turn out to be a disappointing experience :cross: ...

I was disappointed, perhaps because I had seen it advertised as a black comedy, but I also felt it left too many things unanswered.

I loved it.

It thought it was absolutely, no almost, perfect. I often found i was the only one in the cinema laughing (big loud guffaws, too) so I am not surprised it was not to everyone's taste. I guess my humour aligns more with the writers. I thought so many bits were hilarious, but I think it might be my Cathoilic background showing. Quietly intelligent, darkly funny with many gut-punchingly tragic bits.

I also had trouble with some of the Irish accents and the first thing I thoight was can't wait to see this on DVD so I can go over bits with subtitles.

9.5/10 for me. I think if I see another film this year even half as good I will have had an amazing 2014.

marks deducted for
not finding out who burned down the church & who killed the dog, and the mumbling
Really enjoyed this film. The opening scene in the confession box was fantastic.

At last , someone who agrees with me about this long boring film . I have read the 'critics' reviews about how funny and witty it is , and I was beginning to think that there was something wrong with me . The only thing that this film showed me was how some people live a boring existance in rural Ireland where there is nothing to do beyond going to the local pub where everybody knows everything about everyones life . Brrrrr , much too stark an existance for me !

What a horrid, horrid film. This left me with a really bad taste in my mouth (and not just from the opening sentence!). I went in with the impression that this was going to be a comedy along the lines of The Funeral etc. not least due to it having several well known Irish comedian/comedy actors in it. Even Brendan Gleeson has played plenty of roles in comedy drama films, but this...this was just plain bleak!
I can understand that the topic/main theme, although used as a background rather than an exploration of the actual issue is a serious one which has been the source of misery to hundreds/thousands? over the years, and The Church has some significant demons to exorcise, and as such it does deserve to be brought to the attention, but to bill this as a comedy (albeit black) is just wrong.
I could hear others in the cinema laughing outloud as if this was Bridesmaids or an episode of Only Fools And Horses. but I never saw anything funny whatsoever. Having said that a significant amount of dialogue was incomprehensible.
Father Ted this is not. The costumes and the scenery is about as close to that is it gets.
Bleak and leaves you feeling very empty. Not what I went into the cinema on a sunny afternoon to achieve.

Other than highlighting a very serious issue this film has no real redeeming features at all.

Oh dear SB. We watched The Guard on DVD yesterday as OH missed it at cinema. That's to be my Good Friday film since the office is actually closed - I'll probably still have to go in though!

Pleased to report that I really enjoyed this, it wasn't by any means perfect (there were a few dodgy accents here & there) but I liked all of the characters & thought the humour was spot on.

Loved Brendan Gleeson's performance and although I marginally preferred 'The Guard' this film did more than enough to deserve an 8/10 from me...
