Re: The Hundred-Foot Journey
Lovely. My only gripe was the French did not speak French to each and the Indians did not speak their own dialect to each other, as people do in real life, but of course, this is a film, the only concession was Om mattering to himself. Helen Mirren and Om Puri were a delight to watch. As a foodie I would be happy to eat at both places to try it out. Light, heartwarming and moving that after one almost repeat scene, I got tears in my eyes. And so unfair that Manish Dayal's lashes are so long! I just could not help noticing

We were in the very small screen 4 at Odeon Covent Garden which was packed. Lovely to see valda, elski, ritamistry and funthing.

Re: The Hundred-Foot Journey
Lovely backdrop and such vivid colours! It did however remind me of the Galaxy advert with Audrey Hepburn (or a cartoon of her?) in it's cinematography.
Story was kind of rubbish, but that really doesn't matter.
Wasn't entirely convinced whether Helen Mirren was meant to be French or was English but had picked up a French accent after living in France for 40 years or so. Agree with Beate about the stupid scene in the restaurant when she said "Agian in English so we can all understand".
Glorious fluff.

Re: The Hundred-Foot Journey
There is nothing I can specifically put my finger on to say what was wrong with this but it felt rather superficial. It was still diverting enough for an evening's entertainment even though it was too long. 6.5/10.

Re: The Hundred-Foot Journey
Saw this last night in Kingston. As usual I hadn’t read anything about the film before going and I was pleasantly surprised. It was a sweet film about an Indian family wanting to set up an Indian restaurant in rural France. Like “Chef” it made me feel very hungry watching it – with all the food preparation and tasting. I was a bit confused why Helen Mirren was playing a French woman, surely there are enough French actresses out there? Why did she and the other French characters keep slipping into English? Om Puri added a lovely blend of strictness and kindness as the head of the family – a much nicer character than his character in “East is East” (and “West is West”). Charlotte LeBon (no relation to Simon) was charming as the love interest (it was very refreshing to see that her teeth were slightly crooked – unlike the indistinguishable porcelain veneers that we normally see – please don’t change them). Manish Dayal was perfectly cast as Hassan – the up-and-coming French/Indian fusion chef. The setting was stunning.
I wasn’t sure about the title of the film as it tells us absolutely nothing about the film – surely they could have come up with a better one. I am aware that it was based on a book of the same title – but I also think the book could have had a better title! I was really disappointed that the film didn’t end in a Bollywood dance – a bit of a cliché, I know – but it would have been a fun feel-good ending! 7/10
My major beef of the night was that Kingston Odeon was its usual shambolic self when it comes to free screenings. Firstly, they did not collect our printed tickets at all – which I thought was a requirement. Secondly, they put “reserved” signs on half of the seats in the auditorium – not just full rows of Premier seats either as our (non-Premier) row had six reserved seats right in the middle – for their Premier ticket holders. Thirdly, they obviously didn’t tell them that the film starts promptly at 6:30, so a lot of Premier ticket holders came in after the film had started (in a couple of cases 20 minutes late) and then had to scramble to the middle seats that were reserved for them. The ShowFilmFirst ticket states quite clearly – “Please arrive early. Seating is first come, first seated. No-one will be admitted late”. The “ShowFilmFirsters” know this is the case – I wish the Odeon staff and the Premier ticket holders did as well.

The film title does make sense when you start watching it - it's a 100 foot distance from one restaurant to the other and symbolically, from the old to the new life for Hassan.

Re: The Hundred-Foot Journey
Got a last minute ticket to this today and as I had been hoping to see it was really pleased. I was certainly not disappointed as it was a really enjoyable movie and the story line was right up my street. Had the same feel good factor as the million dollar arm and slum dog millionaire and I thought Helen Mirren and Om Puri were on top form. Would happily watch it again.

Re: The Hundred-Foot Journey
Helen Mirren was meant to be French. She sounded like an Englishwoman who had married a Frenchman. I hated that she kept repeating herself in Engish, especially when there were no English people around. WTH was that about? Why couldn't they have cast a French actress or used English subtitles?
I'm not sure how I feel about this film yet, the language really irritated me.
