Magic In The Moonlight

#1 Post by stuartboy » Mon Sep 15, 2014 9:57 pm

Chose this over the alternative clashes tonight on the premise that it was longer than the others and interested in the subject matter.Unfortunately I hate Wooden Allen and this proved no exception. It has the same verbal diarrhoea as his previous effort - Blue Jasmine - with people theatrically spouting reams of words where a few would have sufficed. The story was fine, if a little long winded, and the South of France scenery was gorgeous to look at. So were the cars. I think the main reason for liking this less was having been spoiled by seeing Houdini starring Adrien Brody on Channel 4 last night. That blew this out of the water in terms of interest and special effects. Even the ubiquitous disappearing elephant trick was done better on TV.
Am I alone in thinking there was going to be someone in the sideboard at the end? Lol.

Pretty meh.

Huge woody allen fanboy, but even for me, this 90 min movie seemed about 30 mins too long.

One of woody's lesser pics, despite v good acting all round.

Lots of "public laughing" at the times screening, if yer know what I mean ;)

This review made me smile as I really loved this film even more so than Blue Jasmine and then Midnight in Paris was just delightful. I really do enjoy Woody Allen films. We have polar opposite views on this film as what you deem to be dreadful actually makes the film for me. It's good to embrace differences o/ 8/10

So true. Strangely enough I really enjoyed Midnight in Paris. It didn't have that intense pressure of speech that the others mentioned does. I've never enjoyed his humour though. It has a genre all of its own. Sadly not funny. In my opinion of course. :-)

I found the first hour just ok, but by the end I was quite charmed by the movie.

Firth and Stone were very watchable and there were plenty of laughs from Stanley's logical world view and of course the ukulele 7/10

Inoffensive but unremarkable. There were a few flashes of charm (notably Firth's scenes with Atkins) and it all looked pretty but this is nowhere near as good as Midnight in Paris or Blue Jasmine. 6/10.

Very Woody Allen, so as expected too much verbal diarrhoea, so found it slightly boring and slow, and nearly nodded off, but saved only by good performances from Colin Firth and Emma Stone. At first the age difference bothered me a bit, but then he must be old enough to be set in his cynicisms, and she must be young and pretty enough to challenge him. Scenery was pleasant enough. 6/10

Really enjoyed this. As has been said, I loved the acting of all concerned as well as the dialogue. I found myself constantly thinking of Dawkins et al vs. the 'magic' of love that can't be compartmentalised into a 'rational' worldview...but that's probably just me! Scene near the end with Atkins and Firth was an absolute joy.

Couldn't say too much yesterday from my smart TV but I found this cringeworthy. The dialogue was terribly stilted and both Firth and Stone were miscast. Did Woody Allen try to recreate the Much Ado About Nothing scenario where the character suddenly realises he is in love with someone he formerly despised?
This had none of the charm of Midnight in Paris.
