I found the last 30-40 minutes slightly confusing and not sure it all makes sense, but it's easy to let that niggling issue go after sitting through the jaw-dropping visuals and incredible acting. I thought this was so much better than Gravity.
Definitely recommend seeing this on the biggest screen out there.

I saw this film yesterday, and hadn't taken a picnic with me! I thought it was brilliant, and like Funthing29, found the last 30 minutes or so quite confusing. There was such a lot going on in the film, on so many levels, I think my brain had taken quite enough by that stage. One to see on a very large screen, and sadly I didn't. (There are dreadful road works on the A1 to get to the IMAX at the Odeon, Gateshead, and road closures almost every night.)

I came out wondering whether or not this film might just pick up a few Oscars in February....

9/10 from me.

Weren't they supposed to have only 2 years of supply?
The guy who stayed in the station when they went exploring the planet with tidal waves spent most of his 23 years awake! How did that work???

Well, i'm just back from seeing this and as someone who actually understands the physics, a lot of liberties were taken for the sake of dramatic storytelling.

our hero falls into a stellar sized black hole. The problem with that is a process called spaghettification. Put simply the tidal forces would have converted him into a long string a really long time before he passed the event horizon. It would require a black hole of the kind only found at the centre of galaxies, typically with the mass of several million solar masses, to have tidal forces weak enough for our hero survive to the event horizon.

Then there's the whole basis of the story, the wormhole that makes it possible.

You cannot actually have a stable wormhole, for them even to exist requires the use of something called negative matter. This stuff is different from anti-matter, its a whole different class of material and it generates anti-gravity. Space-time needs to be ripped apart and that's the only stuff that can do it. The Stargate series was more realistic.

One other little niggle which isn't going in spoiler tags this time. A black hole is a gravitational object. The only paths you cannot escape from are the ones that pass through the event horizon. Any orbit is just that an orbit. If your path passes into the event horizon then your best survival technique is adding sideways motion ASAP. If you're not passing into the EH and all you want to do is change your orbit so you end up elsewhere then you do so ASAP as that has the maximum effect on your path.

The story itself was a bit meh, I really hated the talking heads.
On the plus side, less liberties were taken in this movie than they did with Gravity, so i'm giving it 6/10.

This is Gravity with knobs on!

Only two gripes - Matthew McCockney's broad Southern US accent in this making it so hard to understand a lot of what he was saying. Hell - America got subtitles for Trainspotting after all.

And that stupid robot which looked like a giant cornflake packet wrapped in tinfoil. I mean honestly? Big budget Hollywood, and that prop cost them 74p to make. And it just had some bloke inside it speaking into a microphone. Lol. Even R2D2 sounded like a robot and how many eons ago was that made?

Those two gripes cost this 2 points, but as I was going to give it 12/10 anyway, it still gets a Ten from Len!

What a movie for me to hit the big 100 on too! Good choice.

For me,it wasn't his accent. It was more that he seemed to be talking through the sole of his space boots. I've read several reviews which mention problems with hearing the dialogue at times so it obviously isn't me with wax in my ears.

I loved the robots though.

had a near hour preview of this after Imitation Game. Its curious how the first 40-45 minutes really doesn't feel like anything special (apart from the breezy score and scenery).

Will see the full movie soon, as the rest of it sounds totally awesome. Black holes and revelations..

I'm pleased (and somewhat relieved) to report that this more than surpassed my expectations & despite a relatively slow start I ended up being completely captivated by this character driven sci-fi flavoured drama.

Performances from everyone involved were very decent but I think it should be noted that Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway & Matt Damon still managed to stand out from the crowd.

Although I don't think this is the best movie Christopher Nolan has made it's pretty damn close & I certainly ended up preferring this to 'Inception' (which I rate very highly indeed).

As things stand this is now my second favourite film of the year ('The Grand Budapest Hotel' will now have to be content with third place) so overall it's done more than enough to get a 9/10 from me ...

Oh good point. Have heard of a lot of plot holes people mentioning which I can personally fill with some imagination but your one stumps me!

I thought perhaps he could have put him self in hybernation and be awoken when the ship is detected to leave the planet but then he wouldnt look so aged so cant be that.

So yeah, good plot hole catch, Celini :)
