Agree with 'disneyliz'; first half was a really strong character-led drama, but then the film descends in to a less interesting 'sins of the father' tale.

Just been watching this for, surprisingly, what is only the second time, now that it's on Film4 and thought I'd revisit my review.
"Epic. Triptych. Real. Devoid of Hollywood gimmickry, this film keeps you enthralled by cleverly weaving three intertwined stories over time whilst successfully keeping pace. An example of excellent filmmaking, this film deserves both success and acknowledgment. Unfortunately, the former will prove hard to achieve due to its obvious aiming away from the mainstream mentality. Great cinema."
