Tomorrowland- A World Beyond

#1 Post by prettyxcool » Mon May 18, 2015 12:30 am

Many thanks to ritamistry taking me along to this premiere today. Comp winners were treated to a photo shoot in front of the T symbol, and then standing at the front in the pen on the grey carpet. George Clooney came by and told us he would be back as he was lead away for interviews and photos. Unfortunately, time ran out and he never came back to us!

Slightly disappointed by this, a very unimaginative sci-fi. Just not original, future worlds always seems to have transport zooming around in the sky, and the Tomorrowland looks very much like, dare I say it, Disneyland! So one big advert for Disney! The performances of all the young cast were good though, from the young boy (Thomas Robinson) as the young George Clooney's character, who I felt looked like a young George Clooney, to the mysterious young girl (Raffey Cassidy - one to watch) whose role was very grown up, such that it was really weird seeing Clooney argue with her as if they are former lovers in some sort of mad comedy. 6/10

I never fancied this film even with Clooney in it. So I won't waste my Cineworld card on it.

RE the autographs, I was watching some of it on line and I was so cross as per usual, the professional Ebay autograph people were out in force. I could see this one bloke getting stuff signed, then thrusting more photos out for signing. The Actors only sign whatever is near to them and some of the real fans miss out :nono:

Really enjoyable movie. Great cast. Lots of sci-fi action. A really positive message about us changing the future rather than waiting for new generations.
The scene in the comic book shop was brilliant, and had a few injokes as well.

Saw this at imax and good to see it was framed for it correctly.

I think it was great for family's, nice message, but the "diversity" clips made me puke :p

Yeah clooneys marriage moaning was nearly worrying! And I don't see why this is a 12a certificate!

Seeing all the geek stuff in that store was nice, gort WTF:)

Watched this over the weekend - a little disappointing. The trailer certainly made it look better than it actually was. The story was so so and the pace was a little slow. Some good set pieces especially the scene in comic store - would wait for DVD.

Overall 6/10.

A perfect example of style over substance. Too much effort is spent on the special effects despite a weak script. The story is not strong enough to hold the film together. 5/10.

"building a better world" is all very good, but building it around an advert for a corporation is simply asking the audience to be cynical. Its ok here, but whats next, Starbuck land? They aint gonna build nothing better for no one.

After seeing it I think it was fun and intriguing up to about 2/3rd into the movie, let down mainly by saccharine schmaltziness and general plot fuzziness especially towards the end. There were a lot of parallels with Doctor Who, I thought, but big budgeted. The lead girl actually felt like she was playing a mawkish Amy Pond (although "Pond", I suspect, came across so young because shes simply a crap actress, whereas Casey acts young because her character is of school age). Theres also an 60s/70s innocence about the movie and its characters which I found refreshing.

Was it IMAX worthy? Well, the two segments of movie set in "tomorrowland city" are eyepopping, but they don't last long. I am tempted to see it again just for them scenes.

With some tweaking this could have been great, but as it is its a fun, fair, philosophically fuzzy, if a little uneven, teen flick. If only they could have sustained the intriguing setup of the plot all the way to the end, instead of simply "blowing things up" as is always the case in these big budget movies.
fav 5 films of the year - Tenet, Bill n Ted 3, Invisible Man, JoJo Rabbit, ?
