The Martian

#1 Post by yogi » Thu Sep 24, 2015 10:32 pm

When astronauts blast off from the planet Mars, they leave behind Mark Watney (Matt Damon), presumed dead after a fierce storm. With only a meager amount of supplies, the stranded visitor must utilize his wits and spirit to find a way to survive on the hostile planet. Meanwhile, back on Earth, members of NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring him home, while his crew mates hatch their own plan for a daring rescue mission.

I thought this was brilliant, Gravity meets Interstellar with a bit of MacGyver thrown in.

A fantastic performance by Matt Damon and the many, many fine actors in supporting roles.

It looks wonderful, is gripping and thrilling, but is nicely grounded by facts and problem solving, Ridley Scott really scienced the s*** out of this one! 9/10

Very good, but not for a moment could I "believe" this was filmed anywhere but in a desert on earth with a red-ish filter on the lens.

Matt Damon should do more comedy, he is good at it.

Ridley Scott should do less comedy, he ain't.

long, but anticipating 5 hour blu ray directors cut soon.

8/10.

Saw this in a busy Glasgow screening tonight. I hadn't realised it was 3D until handed the glasses.
I enjoyed the film and did find the tension quite intense at times though I thought it was a tad long in the first part. Matt Damon was good and the use of music really enhanced the film sometimes even adding humour.
I cannot see in 3D so cannot comment about its value in the film though I did remove the glasses a few times so I could judge what was supposed to be in 3D. I certainly prefer watching this kind of film on the big screen and suspect that it may lose a lot when watched on tv . . .but I do think this of most films anyway.
Marks 8/10

Thought this was fantastic. 3D wasn't that great though.

What really annoyed me was the obvious sedimentary rock in nearly every outdoor scene. They must have used the same desert scenes as every western movie shot in Hollywood and stuck a red filter on it.

A mighty full screening at the out of town cinema at Nantgarw
The 'western' theme kept going through my mind too, steve9872. Like a kid I kept looking over the top of the glasses and thought, does the 3d add to the scene?

Anyway, Enjoyed the film but a tad long, think it could have been trimmed a bit. I liked the idea of digging deep and surviving. I did think that they, the film makers were going to 'sacrifice' a member of the team.... something which kept me guessing to the end.

Great film, very enjoyed, much better than the Gravity.
Good story plot, humour and great acting from Matt Damon and humour, however 141 minutes a bit long after a long day at work.
8.5/10

We enjoyed this. Belle Vue was very busy. Very clever, humorous, feel good and positive, even considering the circumstances.

Sometimes in the scenes, it looked like there was a little toy car driving around, which was obvious why.

I don't know much about this kind of thing but they seemed to have considered everything he could run out of except oxygen. Why is that?

It was quite a long film. I have a new found respect for botanists, astronauts, NASA etc lol.

My cd collection was featured on the film too :-)

Hard to rate this film after reading the book first but I knew exactly what happened in Apollo 13 and still found that tense and exhilarating so maybe The Martian is a little lacking, it felt more like somebody was stuck in a sci-fi movie than actually on Mars whereas the book had a constant sense of danger and desolation.
