Re: The Martian
For me this was a really good film. It mixed good storytelling, great acting and some funny lines, not to mention great landscapes on the big screen.
I would give it 8 out of 10 and would recommend it. Even my wife who does not like Sci-Fi at all, thought it was fine, so that is as close as high praise gets for a Sci-Fi movie!

Re: The Martian
Bluewater was quite full and well behaved, after Fox security threatened to throw out anyone using their mobiles...Like many others, I didn't think 3D added much. The film was brilliant, though; the cast well chosen and Matt Damon funny and touching.
Re: The Martian
Enjoyed the music, the science and felt like this is one that schools will want to show (without the language!) to get children motivated about science. Matt Damon great but wasn't sure it warranted the length of the film and 3D 8/10

Re: The Martian
Ridley Scott delivers one of his most purely enjoyable films in quite a few years with his adaptation of Andy Weir's bestselling novel The Martian.
Crucially what made the book so enjoyable beyond the dense scientific detail survives in the transition to the big screen thanks to screenwriter Drew Goddard. So the humour beneath the intensity of the seemingly tragic situation of an astronaut stranded on Mars with little chance of survival shines through. A likeable Matt Damon as Mark Watney helps convey that with ease and it's surprising how many laugh out loud moments there are throughout. Not least the amusing use of disco music as left behind by a fellow astronaut to soundtrack Watney's days.
That doesn't mean there aren't also plenty of tense, nail-biting scenes though. Scott nails those too.
As good as Matt Damon is, this is no one man show. A seriously good cast has also been assembled with Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Kristen Wiig, Sean Bean, Donald Glover, Mackenzie Davis and Benedict Wong amongst the various Nasa staff and scientists back on Earth and Jessica Chastain, Kate Mara, Michael Pena, Sebastian Stan and Aksel Hennie as Watney's fellow astronauts.
A little overlong perhaps at 141 minutes but this is a cracking sci-fi survival adventure yarn and well worth seeing on the biggest screen you can.

Re: The Martian
After the first title card there's a mid credit scene, doubt and haven't heard that there's anything right at the end.

Re: The Martian
Edinburgh Wester Hailes jam packed tonight!
Film was good. I never really felt that Mark was in any real peril though until the reconnect scene. He was perhaps a little too brilliant at everything. I was rooting for him at the end though.
Matt Damon was good but most of the other characters were superfluous. Sean Bean and Kristen Wigg, meh.
Overall 7/10
