Burnt

#1 Post by Beate » Thu Nov 05, 2015 6:12 pm

I can't believe I am the first one to post a review almost 24 hours after the event! Could it be that you all are as indifferent to the film as I was? It was lovely to see you all anyway.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed sitting in a nice cinema surrounded by friends, watching an unchallenging film about an arrogant American chef in London, played by Blue Eyes Cooper. But the story was so slight and only mildly funny (the software salesmen from Birmingham getting the biggest laugh) that I couldn't quite see the point of it. Apart from about three people, even established actors like Emma Thompson, Uma Thurman and Alicia Vikander were reduced to bit parts (to see Omar Sy in such a thankless role nearly brought tears to my eyes). Plus, I've never seen the point of fine dining and edible flowers inmidst minuscule but artfully arranged portions. Yes, I've been to The Ivy once on a corporate invite, and it was beautiful food, but I am equally happy in Pizza Express. So I just don't get all that Michelin-star chasing and all the "oh this is so good" face-pulling. Btw, do they all have to change their habits now or should we try to order tap water and silently place a fork under the table in an attempt to get better service?

Unchallenging and instantly forgettable.

6/10

Yes, very weak plot and there was no passion at all. I found it really boring too. 5/10

Lovely to see everyone and thanks again Beate for getting me the tickets!

Hate that they don't let you in until everyone has arrived and then there is a mad rush to get your preferred seats. Could not get any, or for anyone else either! So we all got scattered all over Screen 5, which was absolutely packed! What a shame we were not rewarded with a better film.

Yeah, I sat down then craned my neck to see where everyone else had got to. Couldn't find everybody! Plus it got so full that the usher, when it was already dark, had to ask whether there were still seats available, then had to be reminded where they were. We still had an empty one in our row but no one wanted it.

"Couldn't find anybody" -- well that puts me in my place as I was sitting next to Beate.

A very silly film but lovely to have a mini FMUK reunion.

Couldn't find EVERYBODY! Slight but important grammatical distinction!

I thought London looked lovely in this film. It felt very much like an ad for the city. I particularly liked how The Langham was conveniently located so close to photogenic Tower Bridge as to allow Bradley Cooper's Adam Jones to pop out of the restaurant to await news from the Michelin men in thoughtful contemplation of the river Thames.:wtf:

Great surprise to see so many members of the FMUK community. :D

I work very close to The Langham Hotel and can't believe I wasn't aware when they were filming outside.

Anyway, I did not rate this too highly. I find it hard not to compare this to Chef as it is a very similar story of a professional chef redeeming himself, and even though I did not think Chef was amazing, it is better than Burnt. There was more humour, characters were at least partially likeable and the food looked appetising. Even Bradley could not save this from mediocrity. 5/10.

It reminded me of 'Chef' too. 'Burnt' was watchable, but nothing too marvellous. Lots of FMUKers present!

Yes, and wherever you are in London, you're never more than a stone's throw away from Billingsgate Market. Imagine all the celebrity chef stalking you should be able to do at 4 in the morning! Surely they all go there themselves every day!
