Hell or High Water
Ok, I'll start this then. Islington was packed again today, and I had to ask staff to put on the air con after 45 minutes, as it was boiling. I guess unless someone complains, they are happy to save electricity! Didn't Ejwrank have to ask them yesterday? It was the same screen, so someone might have to ask them again tomorrow. Lovely to meet Moondance even though I had forgotten all about our previous meeting some time ago! Sorry.
I'm probably not a real fan of Westerns, but this didn't do much for me. Always a pleasure to see Chris Pine, and I'm sure people will say this was very atmospheric etc, but the message seemed to be, if you hurt people, bank robbery is not ok, if you don't and you do it for your family, well that's just dandy then. I understand the social commentary on the desolate area they lived in, where everyone is in debts, but not everyone resorts to robbing a few banks!
A few chuckles and one belly laugh (the elderly waitress: "Two teas and the steaks medium rare. That wasn't a question!"). I had lots of trouble understanding the Texan drawl (sounded as if they were chewing gum all the time) and the certainty with which each Texan carried a gun around really spooked me.
Btw, the title card promised "strong language, violence and sex". Where was the sex? And I get more strong language in one episode of "Can't p*y, We'll Take It Away"!
Was it better than yesterday's Anthropoid? I can't decide.
6/10

I thought this was very good, really enjoyed it. The soundtrack was brilliant! Liked the relationship between Jeff Bridges(Legend!) & Gil Birmingham. 8/10

Re: Hell or High Water
I watched this last night as well. Thought it was excellent. Lovely cinematography, nice score, and a great cast. Jeff Bridges was the highlight, but Chris Pine and Ben Foster were both very good in their roles too. It's refreshing that films like this are still getting made, and I hope it will receive a wide release over here.
Re: Hell or High Water
I went to Islington Vue cinema tonight to see this film. I was quite pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this film. As previously mentioned the cinematography was great and the cast was brilliant. I really enjoyed the story and the ending wasn't what I was expecting. A lovely evening out.
Re: Hell or High Water
Found this really absorbing. Loved seeing a side of Texas that I've never seen on my half a dozen previous trips there. No sign of Dallas or Houston here. I do think they laboured the point of poverty/social deprivation a little too much, what with numerous billboards everywhere advertising loans and debt clearance etc. We got the message!
Rather disappointed with what seemed like an incomplete ending. Rather ambiguous.

Re: Hell or High Water
Went to see this tonight and although not my usual cup of tea, I really enjoyed it. The characters were written well, our audience seemed to have an emotional bond with them and laughs and gasps were audible at the relevant developments of their individual story lines. Again, as mentioned in previous posts, beautiful cinematography. A well-paced film with great acting by a solid cast.

Re: Hell or High Water
Unfortunately, I'm going to have to disagree with everyone here because I actually didn't hugely enjoy it.At times it was very funny and those around me were laughing a fair bit too but still I thought it was incomplete. I just kept waiting for a huge climax but there wasnt one. Like I was expecting an OJ like car chase after the biggest bank robbery but NOTHING. At the end of the movie I honestly was confused why it had finished because I felt it hadn't even gotten to the bulk of the story yet. However, it did get a few laughs out of me and the scenery was absolutely beautiful and some of the bank robberies did have me scared for their fate, so it wasn't a huge fail for me. I'm going to have to give it a 3/5.
