Gold

#1 Post by fraz » Tue Jan 31, 2017 9:23 pm

Busy Edinburgh screening for Gold this evening.

Its hard to discuss too much about the film without being spoiler-y but I did have a feeling something was coming along the line of what eventually transpired. It did leave me with a few questions though..
Spoiler
Show
- why are the FBI letting Wells off with it, he would surely be going to jail?
- what happened during the period where they were thrown off the site, the gold would have quickly dried up?
- how is he ever meant to cash that cheque!?
Enjoyed the film overall though and performances. 7/10

Bigger screen than usual in Edinburgh so less packed.
This was more of a meandering tale. Matthew McC was good in it and looked like he'd been enjoying his diet to get in shape for the film! Those were some looks he had!!
It was ok, but nothing special do I was a little underwhelmed overall.
6.5/10

The first hour or so of Gold amounts to a character study before a series of twists and turns develop that pushes it towards a different style. Yet as everything is played so close to the chest it is hard to be sure if this is a modern morality tale or a conventional thriller and this tentative approach prevents the film from being completely satisfying.

Interesting film which got more intriguing as the twists and turns of the story developed 7/10

Looks like they took a few liberties with the story, but most of the major incidents were true including a lot of the unanswered questions

I enjoyed Gold because of Matthew McConaughys performance which was really good. He wasn't very attractive being fat and balding but he did act well. The story was quite slow but towards the second half there were lots of twists and turns which increased the pace. Looked up to see how true the story was afterwards and found it was very very loosely based on a true story so loads of changes but still quite entertaining to watch. 7/10

Saw Gold in a fairly busy Glasgow Fort Vue. Matthew McConaughey's performance was very good despite his appearance being anything but! 8O I knew the film was based (loosely) on a true story and knew there was going to be some twists and turns so was kept interested right to the end . . .and then left with questions. I did Google the background story to the film after the screening to see how much was true and surprised how loosely based the film was . . .I should probably have guessed this as there are no final pictures of the real characters or what happened next! Still, it was an ok film for a wet Tuesday evening out.

I wasn't impressed -- thought this story could have been terrific but I was bored. Toni Erdmann and then Gold -- hoping for better weeks ahead!

Saw Gold in a busy Gateshead Vue. I really enjoyed watching Matthew McConaughey's performance. However, the movie as general was not impressive. The script was not built quite well for the characters other than McConaughey's character. The ending was predictable for me.

his friend found gold, Wells just set up the business around it.

what happened during the period where they were thrown off the site, the gold would have quickly dried up

there was no gold at all in their mine so the friend was liable but Wells claimed ignorance.

how is he ever meant to cash that cheque!?

it might have just been access to a bank account in the movie. In real life Wells had cashed out too but could still claim to have done nothing wrong because he was just acting on incorrect information.

I mean surely the people who took over the mine would have quickly realised it was all a lie and the game would have been up. Instead, Wells got control back and they continued as before.
