The action scenes were excellently slick, scenery is cool although the giant holographic human adverts do tend to kill the effect of looking at massive cityscapes because they make the city buildings look like toysize ones.
Very 90s cyberpunk, but with modern special effects. The big issue about Johansson ... her performance was no problem apart from one issue - it remains an unresolved dumbness that a Japanese company would build a cybernetic body that looks like a Western-looking woman (mysteriously with a Western accent too), for a Japanese female brain. Now if it'd been a Japanese male brain...or any male brain lol.
She doesnt even once attempt to speak Japanese, which is exceptionally dumb if you think about it, because in the movie she understands it perfectly well when others speak it.
Like all cyberpunk type movies, this aint going to win an Oscar, dialogue is a bit of a mess. but if you want some slick action with a nap in the middle for moody reveal scenes then this will do the job.
I've not seen the original so cant compare.
3.5 stars.

Re: Ghost in The Shell
I have not seen the original anime, so do not know how it compares, but as a film standing on its own, it has a good story, is thrilling and visually stunning. A good, intelligent sci-fi which I found very enjoyable. Despite all the hoo-ha with the casting of Scarlett Johansson, I thought she is well cast, makes a very good Major/Mira.
Well worth seeing on the big screen in 3D.
