Dinner for Schmucks

#1 Post by andrews » Mon Aug 23, 2010 7:52 pm

The comedy “Dinner for Schmucks” tells the story of Tim (Paul Rudd), an up-and-coming executive who has just received his first invitation to the "dinner for idiots," a monthly event hosted by his boss that promises bragging rights (and maybe more) to the exec that shows up with the biggest buffoon. Tim's fianc!e, Julie, finds it distasteful and Tim agrees to skip the dinner, until he bumps into Barry (Steve Carell) – an IRS employee who devotes his spare time to building elaborate taxidermy mouse dioramas – and quickly realizes he's struck idiot gold. Tim can't resist, and invites Barry, whose blundering good intentions soon sends Tim's life into a frenzied downward spiral and a series of comic misadventures, threatening a major business deal, bringing crazy stalker ex-girlfriend, Darla, back into Tim's life and driving Julie (or so Tim thinks) into the arms of another man.

It was rated down to a 12a in the end.

This is a painful film for me, I love the original, but I had an open mind. The trailer showed them get to the dinner, I am now avoiding it, and glad it got pretty bad reviews from a lot of people.

I'm really looking forward to this. The trailer is tres amusing and the combination of Paul Rudd, Carrell, Jemaine Clement and Galifianakis suggests lots of lulz to me.

I am waiting for a friend to lend me the dvd of the french original version. I saw the trailer with David Williams in it, his accent/acting looked really bad...

Walliams is an absolute irritant...he makes my hair clench and my arse go into spasm on the likes of 8 Out of 10 Cats.

"Oooh 'ello Sailor!

He's also an awful actor.

Yep, I liked the idea of the film, but watching his bit in the film trailer really put me off.

I saw this tonight at the Silverlink. We started off with the first few minutes of The Switch would you believe! Andrews was quickly on the case however and she dashed out to tell them they were running the wrong film and she soon had it sorted out. ;)

The screening was quite well attended and once we had the correct film going everyone settled down to watch.

The first few minutes were given over to the fruits of Barry's hobby which was a peculiar mix of the charming yet bizarre.

The film was refreshingly different to anything I've seen recently - A genuinely funny film with some great laugh out loud moments. Spirited performances from several members of the cast but especially from Steve Carell as the outrageous Barry who causes so much trouble for the ambitious Tim (Paul Rudd) who is trying to climb the corporate ladder. Zak Galifianakis as Barry's boss Therman was an absolute hoot, and there is one particularly screamingly funny scene based around these two IRS employees.

One of the best films I've seen this month! o/

I give it 8 out of 10.
