Re: Free Days Out - post them here!
Heritage Open Days is a nationwide initiative co-ordinated by English Heritage, in which many historic properties open their doors to the public for free.
Over the weekend of 11-12 September just under 200 properties will be participating in the Heritage Open Day scheme.
Please note that not all properties are participating in both days. Please check before visiting to avoid disappointment.
It’s a fantastic opportunity for you to experience our special places for free; from enchanting houses and stunning gardens to wild landscapes which will simply take your breath away. So come along to any of the participating properties and find out what we’re all about.
We recommend that you check directly with the venue as the list of participating properties is subject to change.

Open House London, the capital's greatest architectural showcase, will take place on 18 & 19 September 2010.
The initiative is a simple but powerful concept: hundreds of great buildings of all types and periods open up their doors to all, completely for FREE. It is a truly city-wide celebration of the buildings, places and neighbourhoods where we live, work and play, and is your opportunity to get out and get under the skin of London's amazing architecture.
Find out more about issues that are relevant to your local area - from the design of homes to the impact of climate change, and the role of architects and contemporary design in revitalising places. There are over 700 buildings, neighbourhood walks, architects' talks, cycle tours and more all over London to choose from...from major landmarks such as BT Tower, to small private homes and everything in between.
Get your Guide for the full list, or check on this website. You can browse the pages within this website for highlights and recommendations of what to see and do.
The essential Guide for 2010 is available NOW! Order it here - orders placed over the weekend will be dispatched on Monday.
Bookings where applicable opened at 10am Monday 9th August. Full details of which buildings do need to be booked, and how, are available within the Guide, or within the online search section. A quick summary list of buildings bookable through Open House are here

Thames Festival Highlights
Sat Sep 11 & Sun Sep 12 Between Westminster Bridge and Tower Bridge
Cleverly turning the fact that shorter, darker, colder days will be our lot for months to come into a convincing cause for celebration, the Thames Festival weekend events take place from noon to 10pm between Westminster Bridge and Tower Bridge, on or beside the river. On Sunday night Victoria Embankment and Blackfriars Bridge close to traffic for a night carnival and the festival concludes with a firework display from a barge on the river between Waterloo Bridge and Blackfriars Bridge. For full details visit www.thamesfestival.org or call 7928 8998.

Museum in Docklands (in front of Cineworld West India Quay)
Foyer display of headless whale skeleton found in Thames
9 - 14 September 2010
For a limited time prior to analysis at the Natural History Museum, you have the opportunity to view a spectacular skeleton of what is believed to be a rare North Atlantic right whale recently uncovered in the Thames.
The skeleton, which has taken over the foyer at the Museum, weighs around half a tonne, is seven metres long and in places up to four metres wide.
It is believed to be the largest single object ever to be found on an archaeological dig in London.
The skeleton was uncovered by Pre-Construct Archaeology Limited at Bay Wharf Greenwich.
The discovery was met with great suprise as Tim Bradley, Project Manager at Pre-Construct Archaeology Ltd, highlights. “When the archaeologist on site phoned me to say that he had found a whale I thought he was joking! As archaeologists we’re used to reacting to unexpected finds, but the size and location of the whale on the tidal foreshore made recovery particularly challenging – among other things it broke the suspension on our van! We’re very excited to have made such an exceptional discovery.”
Did you know London was once home to a sizeable whale hunting industry?
Discover more in our Trade Expansion and City and River galleries.
The museum is free of charge.
