Took Marjoreemarjora as my plus one to the Cameo, Edinburgh for this Grolsch screening of Cyrus. We had a couple of cubes of cheese and a free bottle of Grolsch. I brought a can of lemonade to add to it as we both are not big ale fans.
Met Aylthonian and we all sat together which was the best part of the night as I cannot say I was very impressed with the film. A few humorous lines which had the audience laughing but overall an average film which could have been much better - but found my attention wandering at times.
4 out of 10 for me.
Thanks again Aylthonian for the lift home.

This wasn't as bad as I feared it would be. That said, it really could have been a lot funnier or harder hitting. I'm not sold on John C Reilly as a star at all. Jonah Hill at least broke away from the same character he has played in every film he's been in, but with mixed results. His relationship with his mother was certainly creepy, though. On that note, I really dislike how they blew over her contribution to that. It's such an unhealthy relationship and the film doesn't at all address her issues which created that dynamic. I find that to be a pretty major flaw.
I wish there had been a Q&A after as opposed to the intro as I'm curious why they decided to shoot the film in such a raw way. It reminded me of how the US cop drama The Shield was shot, I like that style but found it an odd fit.
The night itself was fun, despite having to waiting seemingly forever for the film to actually start. Then there was the lunatic laughing maniacally throughout the film at the wrong times. At first the crowd would laugh at him, but I think we all tired of it as it was truly disruptive. It ruined the tension of a few scenes. I should also mention that there were a fair amount of empty seats, but those were greatly outnumbered by the amount of hipsters filling the rest of them. What was that about?
After the film, the cheese and beer were a nice parting gift. After thinking about it, I'd rate the filmer lower than I felt initially and go 6/10.

Funny that, I thought exactly the same thing too! Some guy/guys were really laughing at the wrong places/inappropriately. I thought it was just me not having a great sense of humour.

Nope, it wasn't. There was definitely something wrong with that one guy. He was constantly doing it and not some little chuckle- it was a full-on howl of sheer lunacy.

He was quite a nut wasn't he?! Everyone was laughing at him laughing! I rather liked it, and having John C Reilly show up was an unexpected surprise. And yay to free Grolsch and gouda! 7/10 from us

Everyone was laughing at him?? Maybe they should have someone like that at all preview screenings to increase the "atmosphere", cos I just thought the whole audience really really love the film and laughed at every possible moment.
Maybe it was the director....

Oh dear, not what I was expecting from the trailers.
I was expecting to be entertained and to get cheered up; sadly it was not to be. I was neither entertained nor cheered up by the film but Biggins and marjoreemajora did cheer me up with their banter, so that made my evening much nicer.
I actually found the relationship between Cyrus and his mother rather disturbing and can't believe it really wasn't mentioned in the film but just seemed to be accepted - NO! the boy was weird!! Probably the only American screwed up child without a pscychiatrist!!! Very un-American!!
I just didn't get it. One of the young blokes from work was also there and he thought it was rubbish and din't get it either so not sure what the intended demographic was/is.
4/10 from me.
Enjoyed the beer and cheese though.

I was at the Cameo too last night. Found myself laughing along with the audience which I felt were more vocal than usual. Maybe it was having been primed with Grolsch beforehand? Maybe there were "plants" in the audience there like canned laughter on TV - to promote laughs in a not very funny or exciting film. Was very surprised at how empty the cinema was, as well as far fewer people in bar, despite free beer! At Scott Pilgrim they virtually had to shoe-horn people into the seats, and the queue to register was right out the door. Hope they don't just abandon these showings due to lack of interest.

I too was very disappointed with the film but not the company.
There was a little laughter but too be honest on more than one occasion had to think 'what are they laughing at'. Really found it quite distracting to see so many people getting up and down thought they were leaving only for the to come back, suppose it was the free Grolsch and soo hot in there.
No wonder Jonah Hill was mixed up, his mother dealt with him and his strange behaviour in an odd way.
3/10 from me
but 10/10 to alythonian for the lift home
