The latest contender for British sleeper hit, Made in Dagenham (or Calendar Girls 2 as I've rather flippantly been calling it since seeing it, more of which later) is a good decent Brit flick with strong performances and a witty script.
Like a lot of popular British movies of the past 10 years it will probably need to rely on strong word of mouth to make an impact. After all the drab title doesn't exactly scream must see. Although it is at least more representative of the film than it's original title (We Want Sex) was. What it has going for it in spades is the feel-good factor helped immensely by a likeable lead performance by Sally Hawkins and strong support from rising stars Andrea Riseborough, Jaime Winstone and Daniel Mays, plus old pros Bob Hoskins, Kenneth Cranham and Richard Schiff. There's also a touching, moving relationship between Geraldine James and Roger Lloyd Pack which gives the story some real emotional weight.
My one problem with it though is it's superficial similarities to director Nigel Cole's last British film Calendar Girls. Both are films based on true events about a group of women banding together to do something that is initially frowned upon by the men in their lives, but who end up supporting them. They both focus on the relationship between two of the women in particular, one of which has something tragic happen to them. They also both fall out at some point but manage to make peace for a feelgood finale.
If it had been directed by someone else I may not have found the similarities so jarring but as this is Nigel Cole's first British film since Calendar Girls and after a couple of unsuccessful US films, there is the slight suspicion that Cole is sticking to a formula that has proved successful for him in the past.
I'm sure it's just a coincidence though and as I have said this is a very strong, well made film that deserves a wider audience. And I'm sure most audiences are unlikely to be as cynical as I am and enjoy it for what it is. A crowd-pleasing potential hit.
